191417 2003-11-12 21:38:00 I used to be able to double-click on an unknown file-type, get the dialog box 'Open With', choose the application to open it with, check 'Always use this program . . . ' and have it open that Application this time and always after .

Something has happened . After the OK click the dialog box momentarily disappears, and reappears with the 'Always open . . . ' unchecked .

What has happened? What to do?

191418 2003-11-13 00:02:00 I guess you are using windows me or later, just click in the box to make a tick appear, or is the box grayed out? Jacob4165 (199)
191419 2003-11-13 07:39:00 No, I'm with good old Win98.

The check-box is not greyed-out. I can check it, in which case nothing happens; or leave it unchecked in which case the Application is opened, but next it does not remember what it did (as you would expect).

191420 2003-11-13 09:10:00 There is a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article related to this or very similar problem here (support.microsoft.com) Terry Porritt (14)
191421 2003-11-13 10:42:00 There was a small error in the default value, but it did not solve the problem.

191422 2003-11-14 05:04:00 Have you tried the OpenExpert utility that was mentioned on the Computing.Net site as one response to your problem?

I've just installed it in XP and it looks quite useful.
