191649 2003-11-13 09:13:00 I just got hold of some seagate and western digital harddrives that were used in xbox. I cant format them because of some type of password incryption. The bios detects them but operating systems and fdisk wont detect them . Does anyone know how to get around this? slessor (3706)
191650 2003-11-13 10:40:00 You can't. I have the same problem. Without the original x-box the hard drives were in, you can't unlock the hard drive.

They are effectively expensive paperweights.

191651 2003-11-13 11:09:00 try a program called "DELPART" its only job is to delete partions does not care about the file system that is on the hard drive it just deals to it

WARNING
this is a very destructive partion removal tool

its freeware search on google for it

191653 2003-11-13 11:45:00 www.killdisk.com

Might do the trick as well. Although the protection could be flashed into the drives firmware or something, in which case you would need to get a hacked version of it somewhere.

191654 2003-11-13 11:49:00 I thought the problem was though that its locked....

Xbox scene might have something good to say if you wanna check there...!

191655 2003-11-13 11:58:00 That'll be bloody Micro$oft trying to help piracy again. Sound like one of their stupid methods.

Try Dariks Boot and Nuke

It runs on a linux kernel (nudge, nudge,;-),;-))

191656 2003-11-13 19:34:00 Um, how does one "get" Xbox hard drives in the first place? Biggles (121)
191657 2003-11-13 19:45:00 Put it this way, the hard drive is LOCKED. There is no way currently you can even detect the hard drive through the bios, so it will not boot into Linux.

If you read up on it here (forums.xbox-scene.com) it claims to be able to show you how. Highly debatable though as to whether it actually works.

If you read here (forums.xbox-scene.com) then you'll understand how your hard drive is locked, and why it is physically impossible to unlock your hard drive.

191658 2003-11-13 19:46:00 That should be physically impossible to unlock your hard drive without the original x-box it came from. Lohsing (219)
