| 192007 | 2003-11-14 10:12:00 | I recently purchased some software that included a multi-region DVD with tutorial movies on it. I have had no trouble with my new dual format DVD RW, but this disk just seems to hang my system. I notice that after I insert the disk the drive seems to be permanently busy .... never able to actually read what is on the disk. I can't open a DVD player or even "explore" the disk contents, and if I try to, I just get the good old "Not responding " indication and various degrees of system hang. The only way out is to eject to DVD from the drive. What's frustrating is that the DVD plays fine on a 5 year old DVD ROM on my old computer! ...go figure! For those of you in the know, is this just a quirk? Do you get the odd DVD that just won't work on one PC but works fine on another? If so ... WHY? As I said, I've had no trouble with the drive ... it plays other CD's and DVD's fine. |

| 192008 | 2003-11-14 11:06:00 | dont know about DVD's, but sometimes my CD's do the same thing... just spinning for ages and never able to do anything. one CD that does that alot for me is an old CD-RW ive had for a long time, i reckon its nearly dead, but sometimes a random CD will do the same thing. usually rebooting with the cd in the drive fixes it, but that doesnt allways work. i have 3 CD drives, and usually if my standard CD-rom cant read it, my burner can, or DVD-Rom. maybe that drive just doesnt like that DVD - sometimes old drives can handle stuff better, actually - i had a CD i couldnt read on my new-as 52X drive, and i gave it to my friend (with his old 4X/4X/32X drive), and it worked!. maybe that drive just doesnt like that DVD. who knows? not me. could be a physical error on the disc perhaps? | agent_24 (4330) | ||

| 192011 | 2003-11-15 05:57:00 | It can sometimes help if you carefully clean the inner area of the data track nearest to the hole. This is where the table of contents (TOC) is stored and it is also a place that picks up a lot of dirt from fingers and oil from the drive hub. Clean it with glasses cleaner, a non-abrasive window cleaner or very weak dishwashing liquid solution and a tissue or lint free cloth. This has worked for me several times and lso helped a previous PF1 poster with a similar problem to yours. Works for data and music CDs & DVDs. Cheers Billy 8-{) |
