2003-11-16 01:14:00 | Hi guys I was just wondering, what happens when that battery on the m/b is going flat or not properly inserted? All I know is that if the m/b is left too long without that battery, the m/b will reset the Bios settings back to default . Cause everytime when I play BF1942 or Spinter Cell for a while my computer will just suddenly freeze (and if I have my speakers, the speakers will make this fast and sort of sharp screeching sound, its like the power just got cut off, though the computer doesn't actually go off) . Sometimes it freezes after awhile and sometimes it doesn't freeze at all, no matter how I play . Just a few days ago, I got really annoyed with this so I checked if anything on m/b was inserted incorrectly or something maybe loose but everything seen to be ok . All except for that m/b battery, it was not really inserted properly, so I pushed it back in to secure it . Though I thought that was the problem that keep causing my BF1942 and Splinter Cell freezing but that wasn't the problem, BF1942 still freezes but Spinter Cell did sort of not freeze more now . Every other games that I play doesnt seem to lock up like BF1942 and Splinter Cell . I wasn't the one who assembled up the computer, I took it QMB and brought all the part there, so I'm sure they did a pretty job of it . So any ideas on why it keep freezing? Cause I'm getting rather/very annoyed . My computer specs: P4 2 . 4Ghz (HT), 512 DDR400, Radeon 9000Pro 128MB(running at 4X), a 300W PSU and I'm running WinXP Pro . And my m/b is a Asus P4P800-VM . I dont think the temperature would be the probelm, cause I alway keep one side of my case off to keep a good cool air flow and the CPU temp is normally under 40ºC (never had gone over 45ºC) and the m/b temp is normally around 28ºC . If I were gonna replace the m/b battery what type should I be getting, is there special ones just for the computer? Or can I buy any that matches the same code of the battery? Any suggestions or idea is very much appreciated ^^ . Thanks p . s when I mean freeze, I mean that even CTRL+ALT+DELETE wont get me out of it, nothing responds . Jase Sen

2003-11-16 03:24:00 | have you guys apgraded to 1.5? you might want to see if it is a psu problem? may be the graphics card is munching to much power?

2003-11-16 04:47:00 | a 300 watt psu is a little on the lite side. what brand is it? if the battery was out or flat you would notice the time/date being incorrect. also check you bios settings in case they have set back to default. what background apps are running?

2003-11-16 05:07:00 | Wow, I thought I was the only one . Well, for me BF1942 is running with the latest update . While Splinter Cell . . . . no updates at all . I know that theres nothing wrong with the graphic card (or is there?), cause this card had been used in another computer (which was my old computer before I upgraded to this one) and runs BF1942 perfectly, though it maybe has to do with the Dx like kiwibeat suggested . Splinter Cell needs Dx9 to play(which I have it installed), it installs during the installation of the game . While BF1942 only needs Dx8 . 1 . How would I know if its the Dx thats the problem? Problem with the PSU did came cross my mind, cause since its a P4 and I have an extra case fan running plus the graphic card . . . hmm . . . . . . Well, would a 320W PSU do? Cause I do have that laying around somewhere, I dont use it cause its just . . . too noisy . Though I have runned BF1942 with a Duron 1 . 3, 250W PSU and with the same graphic card plus a 512 SDRAM and it ran perfectly (also with an extra fan running) . Hmm, any ways of checking if my computer needs extra watts out of the PSU? Oh yeah, plus GTA: Vice City, thats another game that often freezes too . In the past 2 weeks, my bios has already reset itself 3 times >_< . Thanks for the suggestions everyone, any more is very much appreciated . Jase Sen

2003-11-16 05:19:00 | To Tweak'e I think my previous reply wouldn't answer much of your question . I guess I just posted a little later than you . Well, my PSU is a 300W Auriga and I have a 320W Icute PSU laying around (and still in perfect condition, hehe) . Yeah, everytime my Bios reset, I always go back and reset back everything to what I want, eg date/time, HT on/off, Onboard graphic on/off etc . There was once that my date and time of my computer went slower . But once I input in the correct date and time again, it was fine even till now . Well, I dont have much back ground apps running . . . come to think of it, nothing except for the normal window stuffs . Cause to speed up my WinXp loading time, I disable quite a lot of apps (apps that I installed myself) running up at startup but no window stuffs though, except for messenger 4 . 0 . I do sometimes have PC Cillin running in the background but not scanning any viruses . To save ram, I even have my background set to "No Background", so its just a black background which I dont really mind, easier on the eyes I reckon . Thanks Jase Sen

2003-11-16 06:21:00 | try the icute but you really should be useing a good quality 350 watt psu. if the bios keeps reseting replace the battery. the're easy and cheap enough to get.

2003-11-16 06:42:00 | Try turning the detail settings down in the ati control panel. I have found the anti-aliasing, etc can break some games. I'm not sure if that includes the games you're using, but breaks CS (although its fairly dodgy anyway). While your in the control panel, in the SMARTGART tab, turn off fast writes. I think there is a problem with it in for some systems + the latest drivers.

2003-11-16 07:09:00 | Just building on what sc0ut said, do u have a modem in your PC? if so is it a winmodem based on the Rockwell chipset? i remember a couple years ago i was having similar problems with UT(it was the only game i played at the time so it could have been happening with other games). I took the modem out and began using an external US Robotics modem and haven't had a problem since. | Pete O'Neil (250) | |
