192263 2003-11-16 08:13:00 You may be able to do yourself a favour here. I don't know what sound card you have but the creative audigy pci card comes with Firewire as well as the sound. Just a thought.

Get the Firewire and beef up sound as well!!!

192265 2003-11-16 08:45:00 Arrrgh! Not the pci card!
If you can splash for a $130 pci card, save a bit more and buy something like a soltek sl-75mrn which has integrated graphics, and you can add a decent card at a later date.
Check this will accept the mem you have, and that could be something nice to built around.

192266 2003-11-16 08:45:00 The 9200 card uses the exact same chipset as the 9000 card, the only difference being that the 9200 is 8xagp,Which is irrelevant in this case as the mans after a pci card, and irrelevant completely because the 9000/9200 chipset isn't fast enough to outperform the 4xagp standard.

Plus, the 9200SE is the slowest of the entire range, slower then the basic 9000.

Probably irrelevant anyway seeing as the prices of the cards are all much the same anyway but you have to keep an eye on video card manufactures, they are dishonest with their product to the point of fraud.(kinds reminds me of Apple and their product)

Which brings us back to the pci dilemma, Any modern card that runs on the pci slot is limited not by the chipset on the card but by the speed of the pci slot, So there is no need to buy a fast performing card as it wont run any faster or better then a cheaper one.

Ati or NVIDIA, it won't matter just buy the cheapest you can find (within limits of course but a g4mx would do you fine)

192267 2003-11-16 09:30:00 That was part of my concern metla...

And Im going to debate getting a new mobo with OnBoard graphics... They're never going to be as good as AGP, or probably PCI for that matter. They certainly arent now.

And its ever worse if you have Shared Memory, as opposed to dedicated OnBoard!!!!

A PCI card would be better than a mobo upgrade ATM IMHO.

192268 2003-11-16 19:30:00 Thanks a heap guys you make a lot of sense, so I think i'll go with the el cheapo pci card. One other question though what is the expected lifespan of the card as I have a voodoo banshee 16MB but games life age of mythology doesn't support it. Is this going to happen reasonably soon to the GeForce4 MX card as well?

Any thoughts

Cheers

192269 2003-11-17 06:43:00 any difference between sdram and ddr on the board for a video card using pci or are they the same.

Interestingly Noel Leemings are the 2nd best price for a 128MB geforce4 pci (not that I'll go for that prob. just the 64MB but interesting just the same) on pricespy

Cheers
