192888 2003-11-18 08:56:00 hi.
I'm always getting asked by people if they can geta better vid card - i then ask them if they have an AGP slot - or the vid is on board - most people don't no...

Is there a easy way to check? either via teh OS (most use XP) or a small program (not one of these 1mb+ benchmark etc prog's) aviavlable?

Thanks

192889 2003-11-18 08:59:00 o god... sorry about spelling. All these late nights/early mornings studying for my exams - plus the fact that i had 2 write 4 300word essays today - all my writing abilties have gone for the rest of the day :( fergie (424)
192890 2003-11-18 09:07:00 If the socket that the monitor cable plugs into on the back of the PC runs longwise (top to bottom) of a tower case, or left to right in a desktop case then its on the motherboard.

Put another way, if the monitor socket runs in the same plane as the largest dimension of the computer case, its on-board.

If its on the motherboard, it will be close to the parallel printer port.

If it runs across the case, which is in the same plane as the smaller dimension of the back of the case, its a separate card. True, that in this case it could be a PCI card.

If an AGP card, it will be crosswise on a tower case, closest to the centre of the case. AGP slots are to the centre of the PC relative to PCI slots.

Haha, jokes.

192892 2003-11-19 03:45:00 hi.
Thanks godfather,
I thought about that - but there are a few motherboards that have onbaord vid - but also have a AGP slot to, and the onbarod is used at purcahse to cheap $$ down.
And alot of people aren't to keen on opening up the case etc.

Anything else?

192894 2003-11-19 04:49:00 Only otherway is to check the manual. Either download it from the manufacturer or cruise around sites like HP to find out about theirs. Otherwise it has to be a look and see. :) Pheonix (280)
192895 2003-11-19 05:16:00 6th for maths? Your nuts. 5th form was hard enough. English was quite hard. Obscure essay questions. mejobloggs (264)

I have just posted a link to to a small pci detect utilty that I notice identifies AGP slots as well at least it did on the two machines I tested it on.
