2003-11-18 07:54:00 | I had a problem and with the help of GOOGLE I found two Downloads which assisted me with a "CODEC". Unfortunately one was not "kosher" and I was wondering if any one knew the original name of the one which "google" said had been HACKED.....for legitimately buying...... | olldaddy76 (2539) | |

2003-11-18 23:46:00 | I agree the legitimate ones are always better and thanks again for the advice. | olldaddy76 (2539) | |
2003-11-18 23:52:00 | The divx codec is free if you accept the spyware,or you can pay for it and get the non-spyware version. Or you could just ignore it and use the mpeg4 codec from which it is just a variation of. Lame is a free audio codec for encoding into mp3.

2003-11-19 05:03:00 | divx codec comes out in a free ver with NO spyware, which is all you need for playback. for encodeing you need to get either the adware/spyware pro ver or pay for the pro ver. >r you could just ignore it and use the mpeg4 codec from which it is just a variation of. which mpeg4 codec are you refering to? i hope you don't mean the old hacked microsoft one which divx5 is not related to.

2003-11-19 05:36:00 | Well i was referring to the use of codecs for encoding so yes i was referring to the mpeg4 format. It of course won't playback any divx files but like i said approached it from the direction of encoding files rather then playback. My bad. Guess we need to differentiate between a decoder and an encoder. Or maybe I should at least. Threadstarter, Please ignore my input into this thread. And are you sure divx 5 isnt related to mpg4? Something ill have to look into.

2003-11-19 05:41:00 | hmmm....from what i can gather from this article im reading the latest release of divx is still built upon the bones of mpeg4. | metla (154) | |
2003-11-19 07:29:00 | Anyone got a "Codecs for Dummies" site. My daughter has a DVD Player that does not play DVDs, apparently short a Codec? It all seems very messy to me, I haven't been able to make any sense of codecs. There seems to be a lot of different standards. Of course its all compounded by my unwillingness to part with any dosh. All she wants is to put a hire DVD on her computer and watch it, no encoding no fuss, no mess. Anyone? Sorry I don't wish to hijack Olldaddy 76s post, but maybe expand it.
