192742 2003-11-17 10:30:00 Try looking at what processes that starts up with windows, delete if not needed. Run a good Defrag.
Cant think of anything that might clog the system but tools not used, yet started with Windows

192743 2003-11-17 10:47:00 Apart from what peter just mentioned(start up programs and defrag)have you by any chance played around with any network settings lately?

Also, microsoft have a tool called boot-vis which in some cases can speed up boot times.

192744 2003-11-17 10:49:00 Actually, scratch that, there is no way that ms services are going to slow down a boot up to that extreme, look at what PROGRAMS are starting up with windows. metla (154)

Does this not mean Nortons is disabled, If it does and you did not disable it try doing an online virus scan, there are many, the one I use sometimes is http://www.pcpitstop.com. (these do take some time to scan your pc so have plenty of coffee on hand)
A slow startup could be a virus and some do have the ability to disable firewalls and virus checkers.
Yes check running process's in Task Manager but be careful which process's you choose to stop.
As for the disappearing desktop and not being able to launch programs from the start menu, I'm not sure sorry. But do you get any error messages when trying to start programs from there, if you do post them back here it may help someone help you.
One last question, Have you installed any new software?
