192604 2003-11-17 04:03:00 What sort of file is it? You could try something like WinRAR and put it inside a zip/rar file and then password it, or you could use a number of encryption programs such as PGP etc with conventional encryption so it makes it self executeable and can be opened on any machine without PGP installed.

Or do you just want to protect the file from anyone on the network, you could try setting network permissions on the folder and only allowing access to users who you want to access the file.

192608 2003-11-17 08:58:00 Yep, Win XP is the same - right click, Sharing and Security and put a tick in "Make this folder private". Not that you can't protect files, only folders (as far as I can see anyway). Fire-and-Ice (3910)

192610 2003-11-17 13:10:00 Have you tried making the file a hidden share by placing a $ after the share name then only you would know that it's there, you would then access it by using the UNC i.e. \\server\sharename$\ this would then bring up you folder.

You could also try my removing the everyone group on the file and just adding your users name, this would mean that only you has access to the file.

this can be done by right clicking on the file and then to properties and click onto the security tab, here you will see the users who have access to the file, remove user who you don't want to have access to the file.
