192595 2003-11-17 02:40:00 My PC is 3 years old

I reinstalled win98 se and lost the drivers for my monitor & video card. I can now only get 16 colors and 640x480 screen size. Windows 98se assigned Standard PCI graphics adapter and vga plug and play monitor. I have attempted to change these settings but no luck.

I used to have 24 bit color. I dont have any drivers for the video card or monitor , and dispite pulling the cover off the PC I cant determine what make /model the video card is.

I have a backup copy of the system registry. Will restoring the old registry fix the problem? If so please deail how to restore the registry.

Alternatively should I buy a new video card and save all the hassle?

192596 2003-11-17 03:07:00 Drivers should be easy to get.

Do you actually have a video card at all, or just on-board video (chipset on motherboard)?

If its on-board, look for make/model of motherboard and search for the drivers on Google. Or post PC details back here for help.

There is no driver needed for the monitor usually. A default Windows driver often suffices, specific drivers simply restrict the settings to that which the monitor can handle.

Restoring the registry could stuff things up, as you would need all software installed exacly as it was at the time a backup was done. Otherwise it will be looking for non-existant files all over the place.

192597 2003-11-17 03:09:00 windows directory, you probably can still retrieve its driver.

when the machine first boot-up, the video bios message will first flash before mainboard bios.
can you read that in 1~2 seconds? anything like Nvidia, ATI, S3, or SIS? or by visual inspection of the video card, can you see any model number?

You could try using Aida (http://aida32.org/) to see if it can give you the details required.

192599 2003-11-17 05:33:00 Did any documentation come with your PC? If so check that, and it should tell you what the Video Card is. If not, go to the manufacturers website and click on help or something. fus1_n (3818)
