2003-11-19 20:25:00 | Computer Specs Compaq Deskpro (no sarcasm please) P 266 CPU 64Mb Ram AGP Graphics card 1 or 4 mb (cant remembe) 3Gbyte hard drive RedHat 8 free version Guis, GNOME & KDE The Question what Gui should I stick on here, as these two are painfully slow, I have used both XFCE and iceWM, but am not sure as to the requirements of them both, I am fairly sure one needs Gnome libraries, I Know they use much less ram then Gnome And KDE Which is the most stable, reliable But most importantly which is the easiest to use Thanks in advance for any help Nigel Thomson

2003-11-19 20:53:00 | I use WindowMaker this P200mmx, it's available here- www.windowmaker.org You can set it up to ues Gnome-Panel in the menu configure by looking in the /usr/bin directory if need be. I would suggest adding another 64 megs + of ram though for apps. XFCE4 is another nice graphical window manager. | mark.p (383) | |
2003-11-19 21:02:00 | There's also enlightenment - www.enlightenment.org which is will eventually be developed into a complete desktop enviroment. This page will give you an idea of whats available- www.plig.org

2003-11-19 22:50:00 | I would suggest: Openbox with gnome-panel :-) XFCE would be second on my list, if you wanted something to work outa the box :-)

2003-11-19 23:06:00 | One thing I discovered was using gnome-panel uses 3x more memory than wmaker itself (because of the extra guff needed to support it I guess). Btw there is a way to speed up the opening of gnome-panel menus-go to Pereferences-Control Centre-Extra-Panel and select fast or uncheck animation. Why it was set on this by default in the first place is beyond me. | mark.p (383) | |
2003-11-19 23:07:00 | Oops correction-Why it wasn't set on this by default in the first place is beyond me. | mark.p (383) | |
2003-11-19 23:34:00 | I dont normally actually use a Panel.. the Run box does me good... Mark> Do you know of any apps that I can use with OpenBox (wm) to just get myself a Run dialog box when I hit the likes of Alt + F2 (like I do in GNOME). That'd be all I need for my system, I dont normally use the taskbar or anything like that... :-)

2003-11-20 01:51:00 | Sorry Chill I don't, but I'm sure others can shed some light. Have you tried any OpenBox Forums with your query? | mark.p (383) | |
2003-11-20 02:06:00 | Nope :D I was just sorta thinking along the lines of what you get when you setup TightVNC.... twm and an xterm... I could do with a rig like that (only I like OpenBox better) and a Run Dialog box..!
