193070 2003-11-19 04:53:00 Im running XP Pro, wen i went into windows messenger it wanted me to update to the new version, so i did and started running MSN Messenger 6.0, the problem is i dont want windows messenger to log in when i connect to the net, so i removed it from windows. But still it signs in through windows messenger, the program is not running and i only know its signed in is when i try to sign into MSN messenger and it says i am already signed in, Also messages pop up wen i dont want to be signed in. Can someone help me to stop windows messenger running and signing in ( im lost becuase ive actually removed it) chev (4888)
193071 2003-11-19 05:09:00 The easiest way is to rename the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder to something like Messengerbackup
This is just in case you ever need it back for a reason beyong my comprehension... ;-)

Or you can remove that folder if you wish (but keep it in the trash folder for a few days just in case any goes bad.)

As you are running WinXP Pro....

If you want to disable Windows Messenger from running you can do the following (for Windows XP PRO systems)

Click START | RUN and in the run box type GPEDIT.MSC and press enter

Computer-based Policy:
In the Group Policy editor window select Local Computer Policy | Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Messenger

Under this in the right-hand pane select "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" (double-click to open the policy)
Select the "Enabled" radio button and click OK
You can also select "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially" and enable that policy also.

These two settings affect the computer settings, if you want to only set it for the current user then:

User-based Policy:
In the same Group Policy editor window select Local Computer Policy | User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Messenger

Under this in the right-hand pane select "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" (double-click to open the policy)
Select the "Enabled" radio button and click OK
You can also select "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially" and enable that policy also.

These two settings affect the current user settings.

When done EXIT group policy editor

Others who run WinXP Pro may also be interested in what is in Group Policies that can be changed...

Cheers, Babe.
