192999 2003-11-18 21:16:00 I'm looking to build a small 'PC' using the VIA EPIA Nehemiah M10000 1Ghz All In One Motherboard based on the ITX form factor as the base.
Essentially I want to absolutely minimise noise and size as much as possible... and I'm stuck on the power supply.
Size wise a normal PSU just wont do the trick... and they can be quite noisy too, and looking on the web I can see what I can find. The Motherboard has very low power requirements (around 10w) and the only other item I intend to draw power is a Hard Drive (maybe 10-20w) so a 100w or even 60w power supply would probably do it (am I right?)
I can import such a supply (like the Morex 55W PSU shown at www.mini-itx.com) but can't find anything in NZ, even on the 'so called' modding sites...
Can anyone help ?

193000 2003-11-18 21:50:00 You could try one of the smaller PSU's from an older system and fit a fan controller to the fan to reduce noise when its not working that hard. What sort of periferals will you be running as they will up the power antie.

193002 2003-11-18 23:04:00 Would non-switching power supplys work? From what I understand, normal computer power supplies are so called "switching" power supplies, and they heat up in such a way that they need fan cooling.

I also wonder, what sort of PSUs do they use in the new Apple iMacs (the ones with a dome-shaped base and the lcd screen)? They're very very quiet.

193003 2003-11-18 23:40:00 Non switching (transformer based) supplies would generate massive amounts of heat compared with a switched type PSU.

If the loading is very low, then a switch-mode PSU with a slowed-down fan may be almost inaudable?

193005 2003-11-19 05:07:00 a fewmanafactures make fanless psu's.

you also could try the mini psu's that a few oem makers use but these require cases that will fit them. i wouldn't recommend them.

easiest optoin is to use a bog standard 250watt psu with a slow speed fan. you will barely hear the fan, and if you want it even quieter is to use variable speed fan.

193006 2003-11-19 19:30:00 maybe you could try installing something like a zalman heatsink instead of a fan Budda (2736)

how on earth do you do that on a PSU ???? ?:|

193008 2003-11-20 11:16:00 why dont you follow compaq and their tiny little teeny weeny computers w/o cd drive where they have the power source outside, like a laptop, to reduce noise, and heat.

so use a laptop one...

JAYCAR have them for $30 to $170. They are rated in volts not watts though.
