193779 2003-11-22 01:18:00 Hi. I've got 2 drives and 6 partitions on my XP Pro system. I see I've got a pagefile.sys file of around 785 megs on every partition. Do I need them all - could I just keep the one on my C drive?

Thx

193780 2003-11-22 03:01:00 hi,
no way. you don't need them all. i have xp pro with 512MB of ram. i make my pagefile 192MB total.

apparently you'll get best results if you have your pagefile on a seperate drive from windows. (although i feel it should also be a seperate controller too).

as for size - it's up to you. keep the size it is but just remove the other ones if you like.

last thing: make the minimum and maximum size the same to prevent pagefile defragmantaion.

193781 2003-11-22 05:17:00 Split that up that 700mb~ into two pagefiles, one on each of the drives so it can be simultaneously reading and writing to both at the same time, because they are on different drives, which means quicker performance. aroc (3256)
193782 2003-11-22 06:51:00 yeah, but can't the computer only send a command to one controller at a time? meaning it can either talk to the master hard drive or the slave. not both simultaneously?

if that's true that approach is only useful when the drive is on the other controller (ie secondary controller).

193783 2003-11-22 07:05:00 Well you might be right there. But shouldn't be too much work for Greg to have them running off seperate cables. aroc (3256)
193784 2003-11-22 10:28:00 The real question you've gotta ask yourself is:
Will windows be smart enough to use both the SWAP files simultaniously, or will it always favour one over the other?

Why the swap file needs to be used on most PC's is beyond me.... Bloody M$ had better fix that with Longhorns release!!!

Well yeah, good question - I mean I could understand it when I had my old unit with 64 sheeps, but this one has 512 megs

193786 2003-11-22 22:05:00 I did a search for pagefile.sys and found only one on the C: drive at around 786MB. Running Win XP home with 2 HDDs and 7 partitions total. How come I don't have pagefile.sys on every partition? Have never changed anything myself - as far as I can remember anyway. Fire-and-Ice (3910)
193787 2003-11-22 22:51:00 What on earth Bill Gate$ does with that 768MB is beyond my comprehension.... My OS only uses 150MB RAM (with my fav apps like browser, IM, Email, ftp, CD-Burning software open), the rest of my 512MB is Disk Cache!

Going from memory, right-click on My Computer, Click Properties.
Its one of the tabs over the very right, perhaps Performance, click that and have a nosey around there, you can set Windows to manage it, set a specific size yourself (Per partition/HDD, and it can be a variable, say between 50 and 1000MB), or you can DISABLE the damned thing!

Virtual memory is a fundamental technique of x86 computing.
