193648 2003-11-21 04:46:00 I have just upgraded my copy of Windows XP Home to XP Pro. During the installation process it seemed to overwrite my chipset and video drivers, so the next time it boots up I get a blue screen telling me it has INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR. I pressed the reset and the installation continued fine. This now happens every second time I boot up (seems to be only from cold though - not sure). I've already upgraded the video drivers (NVidia Forceware 52.16) and reinstalled the VIA 4 in 1 drivers that came on the motherboard CD.

I have the following hardware:
Athlon XP 2000+ on a Gigabyte GA7VAX1394 m/b
512mb DDR266
GeForce FX 5600
XP Pro (no Service Packs or fixes)
40GB Seagate HDD

193649 2003-11-21 05:09:00 Yikes! Yes XP can blue screen too, meaning a horrible, horrible error has occurred.

Could you do a repair from the XP pro cd, or even a clean install of xp pro?

193650 2003-11-21 05:15:00 I _can_ do a clean install, but that means losing over 20GB of data and settings... :(

XP Home never had a problem. It seems that XP Pro just doesn't like my PC.

193651 2003-11-21 06:37:00 Try a repair first. Otherwise linux will come to the rescue, so you can install that and back up your stuff to another drive/partition and then do a clean install. If you copy the whole documents and settings folder you won't lose too many settings. You'll just have to reinstall all your software.

See what some others have to say.

193652 2003-11-22 03:44:00 Have finally managed to fix the problem... I installed the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers and installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 (which I didn't really want to resort to, but if I had to I had to).

And Knoppix doesn't work on my system either - doesn't like my GeForce FX or the SB Live! card. :(
