193537 2003-11-21 01:05:00 I have a PC with Windows ME. I wish to remove ME and load Windows 98. It wont load at the moment as it is older than the OS installed. How do i go about this. I don't mind losing any data from the ME days.
Thanks
Tim

193540 2003-11-21 01:29:00 You should be able to boot from the W98 CD. If the install routine won't run, it should crash out to a DOS prompt --- or give you a chance to select that mode first. If you have a DOS prompt, you can type FORMAT C:. It may ask for a"label" ... if so, a "dir c:" will tell you what the label on the disk is. Graham L (2)
193541 2003-11-26 12:14:00 I would like to know why you wish to get rid of ME which is far more stable than 98.
The only reason I have 98 on my computer is for the Dos.
I only use ME & XP for Windows work.

You can make a start floppy with your ME, and use that to Format your drive. Then boot it off the 98 CD and install.

Just an FYI: Win ME also has Dos :)

193543 2003-11-26 22:29:00 Lol made me laugh too. And there are tools to access it via startup without the GUI ;)

Nice time line here - www.oldstuff.myagora.net

193544 2003-11-30 03:45:00 It is possible to convert ME to start with Dos and load Windows later, but the problem was that the drive runs in 'unprotected' mode & took for ever to load Windows. I can also access Dos with a start-up floppy, but it is very convenient to half install 98 in a small partition containing all my Dos tools, e.g. 'Partition Magic' 'Disk Copy' 'Norton Ghost', Xdos' 'Boot Magic' config.
By 1/2 install I mean that I have not bothered to set up the Windows as I only use the Dos.

193545 2003-11-30 04:36:00 I agree with mzee. I escaped ME, but I would never go back from xp home to win98. Why not step up instead of back and go to WinXP? tbacon_nz (865)
