193432 2003-11-20 19:24:00 I have a WIN XP computer in the home office, and a WIN 98 in the kids room. The office PC is on Telecom Jetstream starter package and the kids on dial up. So I purchased a network cable and switch box from Dick Smith to link the two so both could benefit from high speed Internet. Both PC's network cables go into the switchbox, then in turn a cable to the router/modem.

I can get either PC online individually by connecting directly to the original router modem in the office, but not both together at the same time. A hardware conflict message comes up when both are plugged into the switch box ("The system has detected a conflict for IP address # ********"). Both PCs have the same IP, Gateway etc numbers.

Is the problem in the hardware or my software settings?

Thanks in advance, Tony.

193433 2003-11-20 19:53:00 Do you mean that you have set the IP address on both the windows 98 and XP machines to be the same? If this is the case, change one of them (like the 98 one) to something different. All machines on a network (such as yours) are supposed to have unique ip addresses, and if you set both to having the same address there *will* be a conflict like you are experiencing.

The gateway numbers can stay the same, they should be set to whatever IP the router has (I think, somebody else needs to help with this bit), but the machines should have different IPs. For example:

XP computer
IP 192.168.0.10
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

98 computer
IP 192.168.0.12
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Notice how all but the last number on the IP address is the same for both machines? It needs to be this way.

If you already knew this sort of stuff, my apologies for making myself look like an idiot.

If this doesn't work, try setting the XP and 98 machines to fully automatic IP addresses, and they should sort themselves out.

and that is your problem.

the IP address is the a phone number for that computer, each computer MUST have a diffrent address.

settings for computer 1 should look like:
IP 192.168.0.2
SUBNET 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1

settings for computer 2 should look like:
IP 192.168.0.3
SUBNET 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1

Note the diffrent IP address but same gateway.
the IP of the gatway is the IP of the router.

your numbers might be a bit diffrent so post if you need more help

193435 2003-11-20 20:27:00 Thanks for the reply.

Computer 1 (the XP one in the office) has an IP address where the last number was "2". Likewise the kids PC had the same IP address. I simply changed the last number on the kids PC to "1", but alas, same conflict problem. I also tried using the "get auto IP address" button but nothing happened, even restarted PC twice. ??

193436 2003-11-20 21:31:00 setting the last number to 1 will most likly be setting it to the same number as the router.

try it with computer A last number set to 2 and computer B last number set to 3

if you still have no luck then give us all the network numbers for both systems.

193437 2003-11-20 21:51:00 Thanks,

Still didn't work so went down to local PC Clinic who advise me that I can't connect a switch to a dsl modem, needs to be a router modem for it to work - argh!

So back to Dick Smith to return switch, then try a router modem....

Thanks for all your help, appreciate it.

193438 2003-11-20 22:26:00 This may or may not work in your case & it might save you some money :)

See then office computer (the XP one which has the ADSL modem in /or outside of it) & seen both are linkup why don’t you enable ICS- internet connection sharing (on the XP computer) then you can share the Jetstream starter connection to the win 98 ( kids room computer)( & then you can control how much time the kids spend on the internet)

Then that will save you getting a router modem.

193440 2003-11-20 23:10:00 Can you tell us what make and model your adsl modem is, before you change it. Is it external or a pci card? Most external modems will work fine with a switch. what sort of cat 5 or 6 network cabling are you using (with a switch you don't need cross over cables).

193441 2003-11-21 00:19:00 you shouldn't need to set an IP address for either PC if your using a router. It should automatically assign a dynamic IP most likely in the 192.168.1.xxx range. Just set windows to obtain IP and DNS address automatically. Then all you have to do is tell internet explorer to automatically detect settings, Pete O'Neil (250)
