193740 2003-11-22 00:33:00 Hi guys. I'm planning to upgrade my antiquated PIII system to a Duron system. Could anyone suggest any cheap and reliable motherboard for an AMD system? I was told by my mates that its best to avoid MSI boards at all costs as their boards always have problems. I heard Abit NF7 makes a descent board? Cheers. alejate (4892)
193741 2003-11-22 00:58:00 Don't know why you got told to avoid MSI boards???
I'm running one now with AMD XP1900+ and had no problems.

I've also built many PC's and mostly used MSI boards and only had a few with problems but always been able to fix quickly. Driver or BIOS update usually.

193742 2003-11-22 01:21:00 You are planning to upgrade from a P3 to a duron? What a waste of time, get an athlon. aroc (3256)
193743 2003-11-22 01:27:00 IMO the nForce chipset is best for AMD cpu's. I have an Asus A7N266-VM running an xp 1800 + cpu with no problems, its a good stable board but not too good if you want to tweak things without having to get the sodering iron out, AFAIK. I also have a Soltek board with a KT 133a chipset which although pretty old now has treated me well. Its running a 950 Duron at the mo at 1064mhz at 31C with no problems (hardly extending it).

Spend a little more on a name brand like, Asus, Soltek, MSI, Epox, Abit, Gigabyte and check out the reviews and forums for issues. It also depends what you expect of the board, are just running business app's or do you want to game and tweak it a bit? (Duron cpu might limit gaming a bit).

193745 2003-11-22 02:18:00 Is the duron you intend to use in this board some kind of stop gap measure untill you can get something a lil better? the best chipset for Skt A is the nForce2, but if all you want to do is run a Duron then something using either the VIA KT333 or KT400 would be cheaper adn just as good. Personally i would ditch the Duron and get a Athlon 2500+. If you grab a Athlon any of these board will be awsome:

Epox 8RDA+
Soltek 75-FRN2
Abit NF7-S (really good if your an overclocker)
GigaByte GA-7N400
Asustek A7N8X

193746 2003-11-22 02:28:00 If you do go for the Gigabyte GA-7N400 pro, try and shop around for the "pro" not the "pro2".

The first release of these boards were very good. Gigabyte removed alot of functionality from the pro2.

If money isn't an issue, go for a Gigabyte GA-7NNXP.

These boards are very good.

193748 2003-11-22 02:56:00 If you are in Christchurch DragonPC (www.dragonpc.co.nz) have the Abit NF7-S V2.0 for $229 for a limited time. b1naryb0y (3)
