193661 2003-11-21 07:55:00 I have a desktop PC with Windows 2000, and I have just scored a laptop which runs XP......When I plug the two together with the ethernet port, theres no-go (still says network connection unplugged on the 2000 machine). Is there software I need to run on the 2000 machine to get it to work? Cheeeerrrrrrrz. camo (4895)
193662 2003-11-21 07:57:00 oops....."network connection is unplugged" appears on my XP laptop. Neither computer detects the other one. Maybe I'm just a techno-ignorant buffon........ camo (4895)
193663 2003-11-21 09:14:00 For starters are you using a crossover cable, not a normal network cable that would come standard with the laptop? aroc (3256)
193664 2003-11-24 02:58:00 Ummmm yeah, its just a standard ethernet crossover cable. camo (4895)
193665 2003-11-24 05:38:00 soz this is off topic. but camo from AQ2?? if so it's beef :) hi MrBeef (342)
193666 2003-11-25 07:57:00 If you get 'Network Connection' unplugged messages, then have you tried reseating the network card on the desktop, ensuring that the laptops NIC is plugged in properly, are there lights appearing on the NIC to signify a physical connection?
If you fail these, WinXP has a pretty good Networking Help section.

There is no 'software' as such for this part of networking as there is no physical connection available for the software to utilize the connection. Once the physical connection is there (the lights on the NIC is a good sign, although XP's Network Connection Detection should do the trick) then you can get into FileSharing, Internet Sharing and making sure you disable your firewall(s) for the Lan connection

193667 2003-11-25 23:15:00 Well, the 2000 machine (its brand new) has an onboard LAN, which has been working fine with other laptops. Or so I am told.

When I go into the network setup wizard on the laptop, XP tells me that I have to create a setup disk (on floppy) to run on all the non-XP machines in the network. Doesnt have a floppy disk drive ....GRRR

PS.....Mr Beef, mistaken identity methinks......

193668 2003-11-25 23:17:00 Lights! Are the lights on the NIC (which signify a connection) lighting up? cyberchuck (173)
193669 2003-11-26 03:38:00 Still sounds like a cable problem. If you hold the two plugs from the ethernet cable side by side, do the wire colours match pin to pin, or do some go to different pins between the plugs? wuppo (41)
193670 2003-11-26 06:07:00 Just on a thought - the network card hasn't been disabled on XP has it? cyberchuck (173)
