194039 2003-11-22 22:51:00 Hey,

Ever since ditching I . E for Mozilla (which I love now), I've decided to also ditch my Outlook Express for an alternative email program .

Which one is good to use? I've heard of Eudora, Pegasus etc but are they any good? And can you move all your emails/folders from O . E over to the new email program? I've got some 3000 emails stored on O . E so will this be an easy task (the transferring from O . E to new program)?

Thanks,
caffy

194040 2003-11-22 23:04:00 Eudora is highly recommended and Thunderbird is a good alternative also. If you are using Mozilla it comes with its own email client which you may like to try first.
You can export all your emails from OE into these programs but I would recommend just leaving them there (for the time being anyway) and using OE whenever you need to access any messages.
Tip: if you set your email client to leave messages on the server for a day or two until you have made up your mind which client to use you can try a client out without having to worry about losing messages if you do not like it. The messages can be downloaded into OE at the same time until your decision is made.

194041 2003-11-22 23:14:00 Its a lot to do with personal choice, however I moved to Eudora 3 years ago and find it excellent .

It should import all your e-mail OK .
Its seldom a target for virus writers, which is a big plus .

Its nice and simple, easy to set up .

It handles attachments vey cleanly, keeping them in a separate directory meaning you can access any attachments directly from other programs .

It doesn't directly support Hotmail as far as I know, but there are workarounds . I clear 5 separate mailboxes with it .

Its available in lite format (free), ad sponsored full format, or paid full format .

I purchased it, but ad supported is fine, just a small ad in the corner .

You liked Mozilla, Thunderbird is made by them too :-)

194043 2003-11-23 02:19:00 I've downloaded Thunderbird now, but it seems to be acting strangely .

If I click on my email address at the top on the left-hand column bar, (it heads the Inbox, outbox etc subfolders) and try to create a new folder it closes down .

I also cannot make a shortcut to Thunderbird for my desktop, its like it doesnt exist (when clicking on the shortcut) .

If i want to transfer my messages over to Thunderbird, how do i do this, in the easiest way? The emails are allocated in folders of their own, ie "Parents" "Overseas Friends" etc, do I have to make these folders on Thunderbird first, or will the transferring do it itself?

Thanks,
caffy

194045 2003-11-23 03:06:00 I've been using Mozilla 1.0.2 together with Euroda for a while, but then I noticed that the icons within Eudora started sliding all over the place. Also, I got sick of the advertising, and, like you, I hunted around for other email clients - and I've tried a few.
Then, I noticed that Mozilla 1.5 was out! Why shouldn't I use that , AND, on the installation, allow it's email client too?
After having that brilliant idea, that's just what I did, and it was like welcoming the old friend Netscape back. :-)

Still wondering about this one .

194047 2003-11-23 09:05:00 Umm . . .

I made a backup of my existing emails (the * . dbx files) in Outlook Express, onto Cd . Then I went to Thunderbird and created the folders I had in Outlook Express .

And then went to import the emails from Outlook Express .

This took a few minutes and then a message came up saying "Successfully imported X emails from 'so-and-so' folder"etc, for each folder I had . It looked like they had the right number of emails that existed in each folde, in O . E .

So, thinking all's good, I had a look in the folders, expecting to see the emails there . They're not!

Not even in Inbox or anything . Where've they gone? Curiously, the emails are still in outlook express .

194048 2003-11-23 09:27:00 Strange. I just tested TB on my win98 box and they imported fine. No need to muck around with folders at all. mark.p (383)
