193875 2003-11-22 11:01:00 ok i just upgraded my brothers computer from 256 ram to a gig of it . now what happened is that when windows loads up it freezez.. and one i asked me to install it again.

i re installed it , but only got to about 65% of the way and out comes an error
it was
SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module Verx.dll at 0002:24AC

my bros specs before upgrading was

p4 2.4 ghz
256 mb PC333 Ram
80 gb hdd
floppy
cdrom
gf4 ti4200
and win me

i think it may have something to do with Win ME but i kept it for some backward compatibility with older games.

any ideas

193876 2003-11-22 11:19:00 Windiws 9x (inc . ME) has issues with that much ram . IIRC it won't work at all with more than ~768mb of ram .

With more than 256MB it will start to have problems when the disk cache exceeds ~256MB . This can be fixed by adding the following to the [vcache] section of \WINDOWS\SYSTEM . INI:

[vcache]
MaxFileCache=256000

Try it with 512mb (assuming you have 2x512mb sticks) . If that doesn't work, visit http://www . memtest86 . com/ to make sure its not a memory fault .

193878 2003-11-22 21:24:00 use memtest86 to test it in case some modules faulty.

if you install oem version of windows over the old one on the hard disk, you may get errors.
