193799 2003-11-22 01:46:00 Has anyone ever used or found a free computer based answer phone?
I am not after one that will answer when I am online just one that will pick up after a set amount of rings, play a message then allow people to leave a message.

Any takers?

193800 2003-11-22 02:32:00 Software for that functionality usually comes bundled with modems (usually external modems).

I am not sure if the functionality is supported with all cheap "winmodems" and thats where the problems might originate?
It would need to be a "voice capable" modem.

I tried it once using an external hardware modem, and was not impressed with the quality or reliability, its so much easier to use a real answerphone. I know of nobody still using PC based telephony services.

193801 2003-11-22 05:10:00 I've got a Lucent Winmodem that came with voice mailbox software... I tested it out one evening, and it seemed okay.

The thing that I find, however, is that, though the idea seems wonderful and exciting, it gets boring and tedious after a while. The only advantage is that you can have multiple mailboxes, so you can keep messages for you private, and so can everyone else using it.

But it only really becomes practical if you're going to have a computer on all the time, such as a server.

193802 2003-11-22 19:38:00 Godfather, don't forget this old timer. Have just sent off a flock of Faxes using Bitware, for details I need for WINZ.

Only one problem, a new USB dual card seems to conflict, but going into Cheyene setup and tweaking the Com button brings it back to Com5.

Ps. Think Cheyene Bitware has been taken over!.
