194415 2003-11-27 22:10:00 I think Megaman has hit the nail on the head...I'll explain why.

I have managed to narrow down the problem, here are the symptoms:

When I connect up the computer and turn it on, the green light on the computer goes on, but there is no power going to the monitor. I unplugged the power cord from the back of the computer without turning the computer off, plugged the power cord back into the computer and turned it off, then back on...the computer worked booted up without a hitch!

So I shut down the computer and turned it back on several times, it booted up every time! Yay! :-) I unplugged everything set the computer aside for about half an hour and then plugged everything back in, turned it on...same problem...it didn't boot up on the initial power on, but when I unplugged the power cord, plugged it back in and turned the computer off and then on...it booted up! I tried several shut downs and boot ups...it worked perfectly!!

That's why I think it is a power supply problem...for some reason it doesn't want to spark on the inital power up...but it will if I unplug the power cord without turning the computer off, plug the power cord back into the back of the computer and turn it off and then on...what do you guys and gals reckon?

The computer is a Compaq...and it is running Win98

Once again thanx for all your help and responses, it's greatly appreciated!

194416 2003-11-27 22:18:00 The power supply will have a "permanently live" +5v rail. Its always at +5v, as long as the PC is plugged into a live socket. Break the supply anywhere (wall, power cord removal) and it goes dead.

When you get the PC to boot, one thing you have done is to power down this rail, then power it up again.

So it could still be an obscure hardware problem other than the power supply itself.

What type of modem was it? Was it an Internal PCI type? If you fiddle around with the inside of the PC while it's on, you can cause serious damage (I found out the hard way by frying a hard drive). This may or may not be related to your problem.

What the technician mean by "repaired RAM"? If the "connector jammed between PSU and RAM" had somehow damaged the RAM module itself, and all the technician did was put it back in place, then it wouldn't have fixed the problem.
