1351333 2013-08-15 04:54:00 Hi guys.

Just in the process of buying a "new" PC that is running on XP Home.

I'm buying it off a PC tech that said he could upgrade to 7, as the spec's allow it, but will cost $300 and something.

Any ideas how I can get a cheaper upgrade?

With Windows 8 being all the rage, I was think that & would come down in price.

Thanks for any advice, on this,

Ian.

1351335 2013-08-15 05:10:00 $300 -- OK work it out.

Windows 7 Home OEM around $150 ish give or take - That's OEM, which cant do upgrades, as its disabled. You would need a upgrade DVD which is more expensive ( if you can find one) or a retail version of Windows, even more expensive.

If it was OEM then it would have to be a fresh install -- So lets say the OEM is $150 for the software - then add in the time to install it, locate and download drivers, and possibly run all updates, patches, add in internet usage, time taken to do it fully easily 3 hours etc for another $150. Well within cost quoted.

Yep -- buy the software yourself, and install it from fresh yourself, download all drivers, updates etc - keeping in mind your time is worth nothing. The techs time is.

Just did a W7 today, so far from start to almost finish time taken 3 1/2 hours and over 1.5 GB of data used so far - and that's not installing any programs yet.

1351336 2013-08-15 05:24:00 Thanks for the info, guys.

I'll check on the website and as far as the PC goes, I'm still unsure.

I had asked a guy I know, that setup his home based business, last year to look.

He rang on Monday and said he had one, but still wanted to test it out the make sure it's all loaded up.

Can't remember spec's but he said was running windows 7, but didn't have a product key on the box, so he took it off and put XP on.

He said he would ring me Friday, so I'll let you know when I hear, from him...

1351337 2013-08-15 05:52:00 You can install W7 without a product key, but sooner or later it needs one even if you rearm windows ( extend it out to 120 days) or it will start shutting down. wainuitech (129)
1351338 2013-08-15 05:54:00 It sounds dodgy as... warning warning danger danger ...
Post the specs up here when you find out : size of HD, RAM, CPU speed , CPU model/type .
If he can tell you the brand of motherboard & power supply, even better.

A basic new (as in new not some used PC) with Win7 OEM isnt that expensive, or even an ex-lease PC . Shop around for some other prices
or get that PC without any OS, & have him install Win7 OEM on it.

Yep will do.

Said he would be ready, tomorrow.

If I use CPUID CPU-Z, would that have what you need?

Not sure, about that, but I recently reload Windows XP Home on my lappy, that had XP Pro.

I didn't have Pro so just loaded Home.

I couldn't Activate Windows so I rang Microsoft.

Nice man gave me a new product code to put in, after I explained what had happened.

Would if they'll do that with XP to 7???

1351341 2013-08-15 06:42:00 Windows XPA home is a discontinued product so to speak, EOL updates April 2014, I doubt they are worried about licensing XP now. SolMiester (139)

Highly doubt it - why should they -- its like saying give me a free LEGAL product key
:tui:

With the lappy, you already had a COA, installing home was actually a downgrade, Pro -> home. Try doing it the other way and they wouldn't have done it.

You can install W7 (and just about ANY Windows OS) without a product key ( or install keys for deployment), the inbuilt keys work for 30 days but also wont activate.

Look on trademe, and sometimes you see people selling a PC with a trial version of W7- this is what they have done.

Normally after 30 days it starts shutting down unless a product key is installed, but you can do whats called rearming, it extends the trial for a further 30 days, you MUST rearm it before the 30 days expire, you can do it 3 times, after that a complete key needs to be installed. ( that's where the 120 Days come from).

Never tried it with W8 ( no key), But I do know you can get the default keys to install W8, but once again only work for 30 days & wont activate.
