1350848 2013-08-07 12:03:00 Have a new Windows 8 64 bit desktop with Office 2013 Pro 32 bit. When opening Excel files .xls get error “the file format and extension doesn't match”. If select Yes to open, the file will open but is unreadable like this -ˆ A€õã@ý.

I have uninstalled Office and reinstalled with another copy. I can copied the same file to another computer Win 7 with Office 2013 Pro and it opens the file fine. I can also open on Excel 2003 fine. AV is disabled (ESET) and firewall is off.

This isn’t just one file, this is all excel files on the user account – 100’s. If I open the file on another PC with Excel 2003 and make no changes and save the file then the new PC opens them fine. I can’t manually do that to all of them.

There is a lot of info on Google with this error but is not related to the change in content.

This has be related to just this PC but I cannot work out the issue. Anyone had this before?

1350849 2013-08-07 13:29:00 I have now found I can open Excel files that other users have created. As stated can open the files on other PC’s. The user account was a local account and is now a domain account with folder redirection so no carryover of profile issue.
I have also copied files to the local PC and tried to open with same issue so not a trust or permission issue.

1350850 2013-08-07 22:53:00 "xls" is the old proprietary binary file format called Excel Binary File Format.

Starting with Excel 2007, Microsoft used a new format "xlsx", which is XML based. (in my opinion, also proprietary, but that's another topic)

It's been around long enough that it's pretty much understood by every program, and is easily exchanged with others.

It may be painful, but I'd recommend resaving the Excel spreadsheets as "xlsx", on the machine that's working.

1350851 2013-08-08 02:20:00 After doing some research :nerd: Sounds like it could be ExtensionHardening that was brought out in earlier versions of office.

Found This Article in Technet (social.technet.microsoft.com) with a possible solution.

No Idea if it will work or not as I cant replicate the problem here.

1350852 2013-08-08 04:57:00 Thanks Wainuitech. I will make the changes and report back. berryb (99)
1350853 2013-08-08 09:13:00 Thought I had seen that article before. I applied the change and all it did was remove the error message but the result was the same ˆ A€õã@ý :( berryb (99)
1350854 2013-08-11 10:11:00 Finally have this resolved. Turned out to be a corrupt copy and paste of the users document folder (I think) that only affected Excel files.

To fix I copied the user documents folder and paste to another folder and found I could open the files fine in the new folder.
I paste replacing all files back to the documents folder and the issue is still there.
I then delete all files from the documents folder and paste back from the other folder. Remember these are a copy of the documents files that gave issue and problem solved.

Weird but thankful it is resolved!!

1350855 2013-08-11 11:11:00 Good you found the problem. Just thinking about it after you said what the problem actually was - when you copied the file to another PC and it worked OK, that kind of makes sense now. On saying that the first thought would be the offending PC, not the files.

Guess it was one of those weird things that happen sometimes, what does seem odd is it only effected Excel files.

Thanks for posting back the solution :)

1350856 2013-08-11 12:59:00 What pointed me in the direction of copy and paste was when I emailed the files to my PC I had the same issue. I checked on my other PC and still the same. When I copied to my PC earlier this was via my remote access software and it uses copy/paste and the files worked. So that got me thinking that copy/paste may have something to do with it as emailing the file was a clean copy of the file.

Hopefully when my client gets to work tomorrow all is well.

Cheers

1350857 2013-08-12 10:18:00 And so it continues :( Turns out issue not resolved.
User can now open all Excel files already created but still has the issue when creating a new Excel file in .xls. If they create the file and try to save as a .xlsx file then back to the rubbish on the screen again. Also if they copy and rename the file the issue can appear.
I tested saving to the local harddrive and all worked OK. This is a Win 8 on a Domain with folder redirection for Desktop and Documents. When saving, creating or copy and paste I got the same issue.
I created a local user account and copied docs and desktop from the server so working solely local and all problems have gone away.
Server is 2008 R2 so not sure what is causing the issue but Win 8 doesn’t like the folder redirection or something is not right.
I never built this server or configured it, as this is a new client and I might have some underlying issue with the sever.

I have Win 8 on a Domain at other sites with no issues.
Ideas??
