1350811 2013-08-07 09:37:00 Hi all,

I have a 2G SD memory card showing memory card error in the camera. I put it in my laptop card reader and tried to run chkdsk:
chkdsk F: /f
The type of the file system is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

Is there any way I can restore the file system and recover the photos? Looked a bit online, but it is minefield for dodgy programs and suggestions. I welcome yours (non-dodgy suggestions). :D

Thanks.

1350812 2013-08-07 09:42:00 Warning: command prompt usage :D

Recovering photos could be tricky, but you could use diskpart to clean the disk and create another partition - it'll at least get it going again :p

From memory the commands are as follows:

diskpart
list disk
select disk 1 (where 1 is the number of the memory card listed above)
clean
create partition primary
assign letter=Z (or anything else)
format fs=fat32

1350813 2013-08-07 09:53:00 I could give you the Pro version of this (www.lost-recover.com). It was in a giveaway. Dont know how good it is, havent used it yet. But the download I've got is registered once you install it

It's only 2,862k. Or you could try the free version (www.lost-recover.com). But it'll only recover up to 1 GB

Note that this translates into making it even harder to recover anything, so assuming the content of the card is of importance, DON'T do this bit yet.

Really, the question is how important are the photos and what are they worth to you?

PhotoRec and Recuva are probably the best options, imo, if you want to try recovery yourself. Otherwise, you can stump up the cash to have someone like Computer Forensics give it a whirl.

1350815 2013-08-07 10:01:00 The free version : www.easeus.com (www.easeus.com) will recover 2GB. Anything more than that will require the paid version. Used this program several times ( paid version) and gotten back many GB's of what would have been lost data .

Heres how :www.easeus.com (www.easeus.com)

Dont run diskpart unless you want to lose everything. Only once data is recovered consider that option.

Well.. it's still possible to recover, just every write action on the card will reduce the chance of doing so successfully.. so fingers crossed.

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that Clean command in diskpart is basically wiping a huge chance of getting any data back - in plain english its wiping all partitions, any formatting etc.

Why do people suggest using such dangerous commands :groan: I know it was written it would recreate the partitions, but bloody hell, nice going, making a simple recovery more difficult. Try the software linked, it still "may" recover something - then again it may not. ( post #5)

1350819 2013-08-07 10:07:00 OK, well I rather inelegantly killed diskpart. Not sure what mess that made.

I will try the app Wainuitech suggested...
