1328532 2013-02-17 21:14:00 The King James version of the New Testament was completed in 1611 by eight members of the Church of England.

There were (and still are) no original texts to translate. The oldest manuscripts we have were written down hundreds of years after the last apostle died. There are over 8,000 of these old manuscripts, with no two alike.

The King James translators used none of these, anyway. Instead, they edited previous translations to create a version their King and Parliament would approve.

So, 21st Century Christians believe the "Word of God" is a book edited in the 17th century from 16th century translations of 8,000 contradictory copies of 4th century scrolls that claim to be copies of lost letters written in the 1st century.

While that does not appear very sensible, it is not enough to shake the faith of the believers.

There is a lot of evidence that Jesus Christ did, in fact, live, and Christians believe that He died on the cross to forgive their sins. That is what is important to today's Christians and while the above is true, it does not make them doubt their faith.

1328534 2013-02-17 21:21:00 Some people are just desperate for something to believe in. I mean hey, look at all the plebs who believed Marshall Applewhite. inphinity (7274)

Actually, there isnt. Not true UNBIASED historical evidence.
Much of this 'evidence' was written hundreds of years later.

1328538 2013-02-17 22:14:00 Back in the day it was "the norm" to pass things on by word of mouth. People took great pride in accurately conveying the information, stories etc, and passing it on, especially between generations.

I think the OP summed it up nicely with:

There is a lot of evidence that Jesus Christ did, in fact, live, and Christians believe that He died on the cross to forgive their sins. That is what is important to today's Christians and while the above is true, it does not make them doubt their faith.

Definition of FAITH
Firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2) : complete trust

Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.

...says it all.......there are people who are convinced big-foot exists, there are people who think aliens are harming cows. And?

Nutters don't accept anything that contradicts their delusions. Common failing of humans....

1328540 2013-02-18 04:30:00 I was hoping for some worthwhile discussion on the topic. Instead all that transpired was scorn and derision. That's not discussion. That's just condemning completely out of hand.

pctek: Do you not have faith in your other half? I know that I do. I think that if you do not have faith in your other half, then the relationship is a bit pointless.

The only sane voice among you lot is Chilling Silence. Thanks for your input, Chill.

1328541 2013-02-18 05:00:00 I would not call it "sane" - all Chill did is what ALL Christians do with anything... CHERRY PICK the bits they like and ignore the rest.... Disco_Dan (16576)
