As I understand they actually own the land, so they are perfectly within all reasonable grounds to charge but $56000? surely $5000 would be ok? Unless there is some cost involved that the iwi have to cover, or disruption that costs them money I don't see why it is so high. Does this mean that they will soon want to extract $40 From every man woman and child who swim in the lake or go out in a boat? It just seems a bit over the top to me, and probably hundreds of others around here as well. I don't think that it would have been the wish of Chief Te Heu Heu in the 1800s, when he gifted the area to the Crown to benefit all of the people. LL |
