. Many are burned up by friction and the heat of the atmosphere, but those that survive and strike the Earth are called meteorites.

It's not friction, it's due to the pressure build up caused by the falling object compressing air in front of it.

1328291 2013-02-16 20:59:00 Think you'll find the heat build-up is caused by friction between the air and the rock, even the SRN 71 was adversely affected by heat and that was an aerodynamic vehicle. Whenu (9358)
1328292 2013-02-16 21:06:00 Should wrap them in a skinsuit to reduce friction then gary67 (56)
1328293 2013-02-16 21:09:00 I'm sure that there will be a clause in the Treaty to cover it, although they are not too good at reducing friction lately. R2x1 (4628)

I may well be wrong, but to clarify my understanding the the beautiful way only XKCD can do - what-if.xkcd.com

1328295 2013-02-17 21:21:00 The SRN 71 Blackbird flew at Mach 3, ahead of it's own sonic shock wave. The wing and body were made of Titanium to alleviate the heat build-up which caused the fuel to heat up to high temperatures and apparently fuselage was that hot it couldn't be touched by bare skin after a flight.
Not trying to take anything away from the highly thought out article about the steak.

You should be more diplomatic, some members here are tiring of maoris issues. Please respect their wishes.
