2013-02-11 22:59:00 | I hear the Pope resigned. Now I am not religious at all but why don't they elect someone with a few more years in him? Maybe around 50 or 60.

2013-02-11 23:06:00 | Well, according to Time (newsfeed.time.com) "since 1378, all new popes have come from within the College of Cardinals." The College of Cardinals has 210 members, and 118 are under 80 (voting for Pope is limited to those Cardinals under 80). Given that about half of the Cardinals are over 80, how many do you reckon actually fall into that 50-60 age bracket? And how many of them do you think have acquired the political capital among their fellow Cardinals to actually get elected?

2013-02-11 23:15:00 | Getting up the hierarchy in the Catholic church is very political, as I understand it. Would be interesting if they went a little crazy and voted outside the College of Cardinals. Break one 600-year-old tradition, why not go the whole hog, style of thing. | Zara Baxter (16260) | |
2013-02-11 23:38:00 | I didnt know they could resign, I thought they just died. | Iantech (16386) | |

2013-02-11 23:41:00 | My wife was thinking of applying for the job. She's not a catholic but does that matter?? | paulw (1826) | |
2013-02-11 23:46:00 | None of that matters, paulw, if God decides she is to be pope, He will make it happen. ;) | KarameaDave (15222) | |
