1327439 2013-02-11 01:26:00 Why do you think DVD rentals are not so popular any more. I see some of the major players down sizing here.
:)

1327444 2013-02-11 01:58:00 I've started hiring for the first time in my life, and there is one reason for this; blu-ray. It was never worth it before. Maybe I should look at fatso... wratterus (105)
1327445 2013-02-11 02:45:00 Are you talking about bricks-and-mortar rental places like Civic Video etc? Why would I want to go out, to a shop, to pick from a limited selection of old movies, and pay through the nose for it, only to have to remember to take it back the next day or face further ridiculous cost? Seems so archaic :P inphinity (7274)
1327446 2013-02-11 02:52:00 Last time I went into United or Video Ezi about 4 years ago they still had new releases. Has that changed now ?
:)

1327447 2013-02-11 03:01:00 My how things have changed, there used be a video hire (vhs) at almost every little village and suburb of NZ. Those were the days when I was single, we used to ring a mobile vid shop he carried porn as well. A bunch of flatmates/their friends, boxes of pizzas, mega piss and a porn vid it never got any better than that. prefect (6291)
1327448 2013-02-11 03:03:00 A combination of things. Don't forget Quickflix and Caspa (well lol not Caspa it's a joke) and those people who use proxies to use the american ones like Hulu etc.
If we ever get a decent online streaming service here it'll really hurt the DVD rental stores IMHO. Quickflix is close, if they had better quality, got the new releases out a bit quicker, and didn't charge more than the DVD stores ( ! ) I'd never rent another disk. As it is I just cancelled my account.

So yeah; Streaming services, Online downloading (you naughty naughty ppl), & Fatso etc are combining to hurt the rental business. I don't think sky really does they've been around for long enough and it's only recently I've noticed the reduction in DVD rental stores.

I still hire movies quite often, mainly for the Blu-ray or because I can take it over to a friends. They have gotten really cheap, it costs me $12 for 3 new releases at United. Not so long ago it was $8 for one. I think the rental days are numbered though. Blu-ray hasn't taken off like DVD did (not that that happened quickly either) and the outlets seem to be dwindling around town.
