With my 40" Samsung, I simply could not use both the DVI=>HDMI and separate analog audio input on the TV. Would never work
When the HDMI was connected, the TV would only accept audio through the HDMI . Its a bug, not all TV's are like this
So I had to use VGA & Audio from PC to TV. ( I eventually replaced the vid card with something newer .)
VGA will work as well as HDMI , if you use good cable & they arnt too long

or save yourself alot of grief. Go & buy a $40 vid card , most(all?) now support audio HDMI passthrough

Feeding video and audio from different sources also opens up the possibility of having audio out of sync with the video. Not a nice experience!

The Nvidia GTX 2xxx series was mentioned specifically.

Easiest thing of course is find that cable and try it :)
