1328438 2013-02-17 23:23:00 I don't know why we don't get into some sort of military agreement with Australia where we have some of there Hornets based at Ohakea manned by NZ personal. They could do this as the Hornets come over here on a regular basis to train there pilots on mountain flying.

:)

F18 Mountain flying you have to be kidding right?
Perhaps you mean UH60 mountain flying training.

Seems like kerosene wasting to me. Is it so they can machine gun up and down valleys and sides of hills?

1328441 2013-02-18 02:06:00 [QUOTE=Trev;1147063]Moving on to civilian aircraft: for the same reasons, there are literally hundreds of passenger jets mothballed and parked in the Arizona Desert. Although it wouldn't take much to put them back into service, nobody wants them. The technology is dated, the avionics more so, the systems and engines fuel inefficient.

That's nothing, you should fly over the US military plane-park, or google some images. It is mind boggling

Cheers

That's a great idea Trev
It would enable us to keep some pilots with a hand in.
And it would allow us to contribute to Anzac Anzus with out the huge expense.
It would also help Australia, as we would be paying the running costs and maintenance when they are here.

1328443 2013-02-18 21:06:00 These idea's for new toys are all very nice, but....

NZ GOVT HAS NO MONEY LEFT
The govt, & therefore effectively the people, are living off borrowed money & have been for some time.
It like someone with a $40K job & riddled with debt buying a BMW.

1328444 2013-02-18 21:46:00 There's a bunch of knighthoods, a few leagues of national cycleway, a couple of jumps in Parliamentary pensions, a drop in the maximum tax rate and a potful of treaty settlements to cough up for before we can think of getting any new planes for the Air Force. Then, like prefect suggests they will probably get some more trash from Europe to be modified, patched and hacked before being junked.
It would be better to get them some of JJJ's old cast-off sims - - they could "fly" in all weathers, they would not bother the neighbours, and the safety record would be impeccable. They could carry out any mission the fighters would ever have achieved.
