1350945 2013-08-09 08:56:00 Are the desktop apps the same/similar to Win7 programs? Yes they are - Thats because in simple terms, windows 8 is really Windows 7 with a new start menu ( the metro interface) which has different "apps", and the rest of the menus ( like Control panel etc) are in a different place. If you open the control panel, you'll see its almost identical to W7, in fact one option actually says windows 7 Eg: Windows 7 File recovery. Of course theres a fair bit changed "under the hood as well".

What some people dont want to believe is the "desktop" is actually an "App" -- move the mouse to the top of the screen, it will turn to a hand and you can drag to close it like any other "App". ;)

Windows 8.1 allows you to boot directly to the Desktop.

The biggest thing people dont like is the start menu changing. Once you get used to it and how it works, its actually better and easier to use than W7 and previous menus -- Its a simple case of getting out of your mind its hard - its not. Theres been many people that once I've set up the Start menu and desktop to how they like it and given some instructions, every one has said whats the problem ?

1350946 2013-08-10 02:53:00 If you just think of the start screen as a big clunky start menu then there's really not much difference.
I've gotten used to 8 now and decided I quite like it. I prefer it to 7 for the improvements under the hood but as for the start screen and apps they are just different rather than an improvement in my opinion.
I'd like a version of windows with all the windows 8 improvements and windows 7's UI but failing that 8 is ok. The video app shows some promise as a full HD streaming movie rental service too :)

As for alt-tab, you hold down alt and keep pressing tab to cycle through all active apps don't just do it once and let go.

1350947 2013-08-10 05:38:00 I could get used to not having a Start button but I really like having easy access to my files via Windows Explorer. Windows 7 frustrates me in this respect compared to WinXP and from what I have seen Win8 is the same, or very similar to Win7.

Looks like I may as well go for Win8 rather than Win7 when I build my next PC soon then. Provided that it will still run all my favourite old programs...

1350948 2013-08-10 06:16:00 but I really like having easy access to my files via Windows Explorer  Often hear that comment or similar, LEGIT question -- What exactly are you referring to please ? If you mean the file structure on the left hand side of an open window, its still there both in W7 & W8 ???

I just checked on a XP machine, and apart from the obvious different folder names, they are identical layouts - what I like about W7 & W8 is you can put a Folder you use all the time in the favorites.

The file structure is the same but displayed differently in WinXP compared to Win 7 & 8 . In the latter more emphasis is placed on the Libraries, which might be a good thing if I could get my head around them . It is probably a matter of getting used to it but as my netbook with Win 7 is only used occasionally I haven't spent a great deal of time customising it .

One thing that does get my goat is the folders in the left-hand tree not automatically opening when clicked on like in WinXP . One has to double-click on them and I haven't been able to find a way to change that .

Libraries simply display the contents of multiple folders in one place. :)

I think your problem "may" be its not set correctly, W7 -- open any folder, click on Organize / Folder & search options/General Tab / In Navigation make sure both options are set.

W8 -- Open folder - View/ Navigation Pane/ make sure show all folders is ticked.

Yep. I think I just need to get used to the slightly different look.

Thanks Wainui. I thought I had gone over those options but maybe I missed something. I'll have a fiddle tomorrow and check what my settings are.
