Yes I know they had fairly modern avionics in them. To look at it in a another context. How many of you would buy say a 1970 Ford Cortina for example which has been done up. I know I wouldn't. :) |

[QUOTE] Agreed  Moving on to civilian aircraft: for the same reasons, there are literally hundreds of passenger jets mothballed and parked in the Arizona Desert. Although it wouldn't take much to put them back into service, no-body wants them. The technology is dated, the avionics more so, the systems and engines fuel inefficient. The Skyhawks shouldn't have been bought in the first place. Strategically we have no reason to deploy them except to scare the crew of an occasional foreign fishing vessel, and I don't think they had the range for SE Asia via Aussie except stripped down. |

| 1328431 | 2013-02-17 17:05:00 | Does anyone know what happened to the Aussie Mirages and F 111 fighters/fighter bombers that were replaced by the F14 Hornets. Last I heard they were sitting somewhere all lined up basking in the Aussie sunshine. :) |

| 1328433 | 2013-02-17 20:39:00 | Blame David Lange When we banned the US ships from our harbours we lost their military friendship. If we had still had that we would have sold the Skyhawks much earlier and for much more. But it was just a shame that we disbanded the fighter squadron. Another reason that we need 4 times as many people here. Four times as many tax payers to pay for one fighter squadron. |

If we had still had that we would have sold the Skyhawks much earlier and for much more. Why not tell the full story, rather than just the part you like. We were still sweet with the US , they were going to sell us F16's to replace the Skyhawks. This was all ontrack untill Labour cancelled the deal & disbanded the fighter squadron, because we simply couldnt afford it & had no real use for it. No point buying a bunch of (actually old model) F16's since we simply couldnt afford the "pointy bits" (Air force quote there) , ie the air to air missiles etc etc etc If we did buy those F16's , we would be having this discussion right now about needing to sell clapped out old F16's & replace them with something horrendously expensive. NZ needs a fighter squadron about as much as Samoa or Fiji needs one. As to the original topic If the Skyhawks were still worth anything, why did no one else want them, apart from a private US company ?? So ~valuable~ that our govt was going to simply scrap the whole lot. |

| 1328435 | 2013-02-17 21:16:00 | I reckon we should have bought 10 or so BAE Hawks (Not ****hawks) from poverty rock. They could be used for training, ground attack and limited air to air combat. My thinking is if **** goes down we have at least a nucleus of fast jet experience to build on. One day we might have to fight the commies again. |

| 1328436 | 2013-02-17 21:37:00 | Yes, these new fighter jets are just about as dear as a new 747 I must get a quote for one of each to check it out. |

They could do this as the Hornets come over here on a regular basis to train there pilots on mountain flying. :) |
