1350916 2013-08-08 09:14:00 I have a problem and I want to solve it as cheaply as possible.

On a older laptop I have VGA port (female)
and I have a newish monitor I want to use with it with a HDMI and DVI-D ports (DVI-D is female)

I have three adapters, 2x DVI-I and one DVI-A to VGA.

I plug in the VGA cable to the VGA end of the adapter and I am left with a cable that can fit in theory as in one end is VGA Male and the other is DVI male but I need that end to be DVI-D and the port just won't accommodate the DVI-I or DVI-A

Essentially I need a adapter that is DVI-D to VGA but I have read that as DVI-D is digital only it might not work.

Can anyone shed light on this?

1350917 2013-08-08 09:50:00 You need more than a simple adaptor as VGA is analogue and DVI is digital. See here for an example www.aten.co.nz linw (53)
1350918 2013-08-08 10:18:00 You need something like this (www.anywarenz.co.nz). inphinity (7274)

Any other options at all?

1350920 2013-08-08 10:43:00 If the laptop only has VGA out, just use a standard VGA cable. Driftwood (5551)

The monitors I have do not have VGA

1350922 2013-08-08 11:14:00 Then you're SOL. Either buy a converter, or use a monitor that has a compatible input. inphinity (7274)
1350923 2013-08-08 21:33:00 If you need a converter why do DVI-D to VGA plugs even exist if they do not work? DeSade (984)

Because they're actually DVI-A to VGA adapters ;)

DVI-D is digital only, DVI-A is analogue only and DVI-I is both. You can't insert a DVI-A plug into a DVI-D connector.

1350925 2013-08-08 22:01:00 The simple answer is, your monitor is digital only, the old laptop is analog only

You cant push a square peg onto a round hole

-some monitors will accept both analog & dig inputs, thats what those cheap adaptors were made for. These monitors would usually have both DVI & VGA socket anyway
