It shows a new way of bringing skyscrapers down in Tokyo.

Can some of you tell me if you think they are taking the stories from the top or the bottom ?

1327602 2013-02-12 01:01:00 They are taking them from the top, I think Digby.
I must say it appears to be a better way to deal with hi-rise buildings,
but I wonder about the cost comparison.

1327603 2013-02-12 01:31:00 I guess with reclaiming realestate safely it's a bonus, although the initial collapse is instant and explosive demolition requires months of planning and massive safety precautions, followed by the clean up. Big risk of something going wrong too. The Error Guy (14052)

It seems to me that what seems to be a "collar" around the structure near the top, houses space to dismantle one floor at a time, when that is completed, descending one more level and dismantling that and so on. If that is correct, I can't think why the 3 - 4 floors above the "collar" are there for.

Great post, Digby.

Pity the cameraman never gave us any idea of the height of the thing.

I'm still not sure.

At first I though that "collar" was part of the building.
But you can see it moving if you look very carefully.

But why did they build the collar so elaborately so that it looks like par of the original building.

Yes that method must cost much more than explosives etc. but much safer and no clean up and dust etc.
