194803 2003-11-26 04:09:00 Looking at buying a new PC soon to replace my 4 year old beastie. I got the old one with MS Office 1997(?) installed (OEM) and shortly after I updated it to the 2000 Small Business Edition with an upgrade disk that depended on you having the original software already installed. Will I have any problems loading this onto a (Oh, of course I will remove the software from the old PC because it would be wrong to leave it there wouldn't it). oggy (1250)
194804 2003-11-26 04:35:00 the microsoft response is that it would be wrong to install it on the new pc never mind the fact that you took it off the old one.
Because it is OEM you bought it with the old PC, the license lasts as long as the old PC does. Hence the reduced price.
but however if you were to reinstall this onto A pc then it should work depending on whether you had to reactivate it, sometimes they let you reactivate a product once before they get shirty.
look at my post as per here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) this is pretty standard OEM not just WIN XP as per my post.

194805 2003-11-26 20:05:00 I think Office 2000 came out before product reactivation came into being. I have reloaded it a couple of times onto my old PC and only had to load the serial number from the back of the cd case with no further correspondence to Microsoft required. Extra RAM and new HDD had been installed before the last reload. oggy (1250)
194806 2003-11-26 20:29:00 No, Offie 2k was the start of activatation, some versions could only be used 50 times without being activated. Wayne H (1736)
194807 2003-11-26 21:14:00 Only retail versions of O2k sold in Oceania were subject to activation.

Its slightly possible that upgrades were not however.

194808 2003-11-26 21:20:00 you can install the upgrade one on your new pc ok. on install you will need to insert your old office disk into the cd drive so the setup can see that you have a product to upgrade from. if you have a restore disk then you will need to get another qualifing product (i use an old works 4.5 whoich cost a whole $5). the upgrade disk also has activation so you will need to conntact MS and explain that you have upgrade the pc. tweak'e (174)

UPGRADE being the operative word do not tell them you bought a new PC

dosn't make any difference. you are allowed to install it on a new pc.

194812 2003-11-27 21:11:00 Ohhh.
Just rang the Dark Empire at Microsoft NZ to get their version.
OEM software can't be taken from one PC and installed on another because of the licence. End of discussion! (This was of course from a legal standpoint. I was tempted to ask what would happen if I did it anyway but being connected to them by a telephone line, I feared having a thunderbolt hurled at me so I didn't ask.) They confirmed that if you buy a retail version you can reinstall it on another PC no problems as long as you remove it from the first.
I've always preferred to do things legally and don't use pirated software, but it just seems silly to have to buy another copy of the software when I have a perfectly good set of disks that I paid Microsoft for sitting right beside my PC. Bit like having to buy two copies of a book...one to read in bed and one to read in the bath. But then again I guess the OEM version is cheaper than retail so....
