194778 2003-11-26 03:29:00 Hi.
I got a problem with a CDROM drive on my parents PC - XP Pro, 1ghz duron, 256mb DDR.

Its an Atapi 50x has been working fine the past few years - since we've had it - but over the last few days - it isn't picking up the CD's I put in it.

If i put a cd in it - and go to the drive - it says "Please insert a cd into drive"

I've tried unistalling it - and reinsatlling it - same thing, I've checked the cords are in right, no luck...

Anyone no wots worng? or is it time for a new one?

Thanks

And I don't think Atapi will be the manufacturer of the drive... that's a method used to communicate with the CD drive, like ASPI.

194782 2003-11-26 03:59:00 When you are hauling out the CD-ROM drive, have a look on the sticker on the top of it - it will give you the make & model number if you wish to look up a specific driver for it. However, if it is a plain ROM drive, then the drivers XP provide should do the trick. Jen C (20)
194783 2003-11-26 04:09:00 It probably has dust/crud on the lens .

$30 will get you a lens cleaner disk (get a brandname one, eg phillips) .

But $50 will get you a new CD-ROM, and $80 will get a CD-RW .

194785 2003-11-26 06:13:00 Lol - I tried using my Lens cleaner cd, but it wouldn't pik the cd up - so that was no use - I'm off to try it in my PC now.
Thanks
