194813 2003-11-27 21:21:00 so buy (second hand) a version of lotus or something, based on Competitive upgrade, that would not set you back more than 10-20 bucks.
As long as the O2K was retail and not OEM you would be OK.
MS OFFICE 2K can be upgraded from MS office 95 or 97, works 4.5, and newer, lotus smartsuite 97/8 or newer.

194814 2003-11-27 22:38:00 What would happen...
a) if I took my current fairly new hard drive with all the software on it and dropped it into the new PC as D: and ran Office off that?
b) if I did the imaging thing from the current HD to the HD in the new PC?
Would either of those options work?

194815 2003-11-27 22:48:00 if the new pc has a new os eg winXP then it would require a reinstall of office.

you could just image the data across the to the new pc BUT because of the change in hardware you may have a large amount of hassle geting it to work properly. best bet is to do a fresh start and install from scratch.

i can't really see what the problem is here. provided that the office97oem is a qualifying product then just install office2k and insert office97 disk when it asks for a qualifing product, then activate office2k. going by the info you have provided its all legal.

194816 2003-11-27 22:49:00 just to add........my works4.5 is oem and MS certainly hasn't said anything the last time i upgraded the pc. tweak'e (174)

That is the problem because office 97 OEM was bought with the OLD pc it is NOT a qualifying product.
Strictly Speaking OEM is for the hardware that it was purchased with ONLY.
if you read microsoft's eula even if you change the memory in the computer you have bought then you are technically in breach of the licence.
you can add but you can not change. hence the reason that most business class computers almost never come with two sticks of ram where one would do (ie 1x512 instead of 2x256 which is cheaper) unless for dual channal or for specific reasons that either the seller or the buyer may have
I am not a closet MS employee, just a reseller.

who cares !

>OEM software can't be taken from one PC and installed on another because of the licence. End of discussion!

the old 97 will not be installed on ANY pc. he will NOT be installing it on the new pc as the lience porbids it. the office2k setup still reconises OEM disk as a qualifing product even tho its not installed.
i havn't seen anywhere or even when i spoke to MS that they forbid useing OEM as qualifing products.

you seem to be missing the point. the office 2k is an upgrade.

Upgrade from what?
the product which qualifies that is already on the PC.

The Microsoft fact is that there NEEDS to be a qualifying product already on the PC.
Placing the office 97 oem cd in the cd rom says that the office 97 is ALREADY there. Hence the licence is voided

194820 2003-11-28 01:17:00 the new pc will have a bare drive onto which the os will be installed. then to install office2k (note- office97 is not installed on the new pc) he simply starts the install, either puts the office97 disk in one of the other cd drives or when office2k can't find a qualifing product he will need to put it the cd drive. once the ofice2k setup has id'ed the office97 it will install.

>The Microsoft fact is that there NEEDS to be a qualifying product already >on the PC.

NO. office 2k only CHECKS for a qualifing product, you do not NEED to have the qualifing product installed. you only need it in acd drive for it see it. in fact due to the lienceing you can't and there is less problems with conflicts if you don't have new and old versions of office installed.

this is how i have done mine several times and MS has never quiered it when i had to reactivate it due to hardware changes.

Wrong, as long as you have qualifying product you can upgrade.

194822 2003-11-28 03:39:00 I am not disputing that you CAN do it, the question was of legality which has been answered by Mat at microsoft NZ on Phone # (09) 357-5576 option 1 for sales and services .
I rang them saying i had a theoretical client doing this and what is microsoft's official position on this,
any querries doubts or concerns could be forwarded to licensing . at . mssdotcodotnz .

Also as an aside I finally found what the OEM requirements in NZ are .
mem, internal drives, mice, keyboard, power supplies, and internal peripherals .
