194788 2003-11-26 23:58:00 Does the CD drive spin-up upon inserting CDs (make sure you hear a whiring of the drive spinning the CD). That'll at least tell you it's trying to find a CD.

I'm sure there are tools that can access CD drives by bypassing the OS and doing it on a system/hardware level, but I can't think of any.

And all those sorts of tools would show is whether the drive is faulty or your operating systems have large problems.

Another way would be to try booting into DOS from a startup disk that loads a CD-ROM driver (try www.bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98 rescue disk), and see if you can read CDs that way.

194789 2003-11-26 23:58:00 o hey - one more thing.
Is it possible to run 3 IDE HDD's and 2 CDROMS (a dvd and a cdrw) both IDE - from one computer?

Plus - its my 400th post - lol

194790 2003-11-27 00:03:00 hi.
I can't hear any sound when i put a disk in.
The lights flash tho - and sometimes the little CD icon comes up in XP (next to the cursor) but still nothing

194791 2003-11-27 00:13:00 Forgot to ask, have you recently flashed the firmware on the drive? I know a lot of people say you shouldn't, because it can damage the drive, but I've done countless firmware flashes with no problems (except where I now have a region-locked DVD drive that's supposed to be region-free, because I flashed the firmware with one change left). agent (30)
194792 2003-11-27 00:31:00 It is possible, but you'd most likely need a new motherboard, with more than two IDE controllers.

Most motherboards come with two IDE controllers on board, and each controller can take two devices. This allows for a maximum of four IDE devices. So you would have to take out on of your HDDs from your plan or one of the CD drives.

Another way would be to find out if your motherboard has a SCSI controller, which would allow you to also use SCSI HDDs and CD drives, which are theoretically faster, though the technology is dating. If you motherboard had a Serial ATA controller that would also allow you to connect more than four devices.

Either that or get hold of a PCI IDE Card.. There's one in one of the machines downstairs - took the machine from 2 IDE controllers up to 6. No idea how it does it or anything, all I know is it works :p

www.arrowkey.com

I've never used it before, so I don't know how well it works (comes on the latest APC Magazine CDs).

194795 2003-11-27 01:50:00 Hi.
Nope, I ain't flashed the firmware.
Are those PCI IDE cards availaibe to buy? Are they expensive?

And regarding that program - i think it's more aimed towards checking the cd, not the actual drive (i may be wrong) - plus, its $50US - better off getting a new CDROM drive.

Thanks though

194796 2003-11-27 02:11:00 fergie,

Just as a matter of interest, that ACER cdrom didn't happen to come out of a PC Company pc did it? It's just that we have had a significant number of failed ACER cdroms ex PC Company pc (cdroms dated between late 1999 and Dec 2001). Cheaper to replace with equivalent model than diagnose the actual failure although for what it's worth I'll get one of the crew to disassemble and have a look.

Cheers, Babe.

194797 2003-11-27 02:29:00 um... i think it did.
Its from my parents PC - which was originally a PC company PC (purchased through a local retailer - that specialised in PC Company pc's)
ANd the original CDROM packed up - so we got a replacement from there - which, i think, is the one that I'm haveing troubles with now.
