| 195398 | 2003-11-28 04:31:00 | (HTOTW = Hot Tune Of The Week, Real Audio Player is needed to listen, sorry folks, that's out side of my control) This week the featured tune is Stardust, one of the most widely recorded ballads of the 20th century. Yet it started out as a jazzy tune composed by the immortal Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981) in 1927, and inspired he said, by the lyrical phrasing of the equally immortal Bix Beiderbecke, with whom he was closely associated. The first recording of this standard was also in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael and his Pals, a band which included the Dorsey brothers Jimmy (clarinet, alto-saxophone) and Tommy (trombone, and also a mean, hot trumpet). My favorite version (it is very difficult to choose a favorite) recorded 2 years later, also features the Dorsey brothers in the Irving Mills "Hotsy Totsy Gang" band, this is also a hot version compared to the later ballads. Click here (www.redhotjazz.com) and listen to a superb arrangement. In the same year Hoagy reworked the tune into a ballad version and words were added by Mitchell Parish. The ballad version (without words though) recorded by Isham Jones and his Orchestra became a best hit of 1931, and from then on the tune took off to be recorded by virtually all vocalists and dance bands of succeeding generations. There are hundreds if not thousands of versions recorded over the years. Isham Jones version (www.redhotjazz.com) The other hit version of 1931 was Bing Crosby's recording. I used to have this on a Brunswick 78rpm, sadly long since gone. Unfortunately all I can find is a 30 second clip from Amazon (www.amazon.com) which doesn't do it justice at all. | 195402 | 2003-11-28 07:45:00 | Real Player 8 off an older PCW disk is the thing to use Susan, just turn off Take 5 and disable start centre, and anything that wants to connect out or update etc. If it comes bundled with Jukebox which it may, then uninstall Jukebox. Run Adaware to remove Comet Cursor, the player is then "benign" and just a player :) | Terry Porritt (14) | ||

So, if your old clucker won't run the latest wiz bang version of something or other you at least have a chance to get one that works. Cheers Murray P |
