no. You can still share a dial-up connection between 2 computer (what i'm doing at the moment). It will just be quite slow if both computers are trying to access the internet at the same time.

195126 2003-11-28 00:46:00 Hi Beetle

To save yourself sometime, I think we established some weeks ago that your machine does not have a NIC nor onboard lan when we were trouble-shooting your slow bootup time on this PC.

Your Office machine because it is newer however might have onboard lan. Look under Device Manager > Network Adapters for a device listing.

This machine already has a NIC card installed - just needs to be enabled when you are ready to utilise it .

You just need to have a NIC put into the older machine, they are quite cheap . Then you add the cross-over cables and you are all done (hardware wise at least :D)

195130 2003-11-28 01:28:00 You could get your local friendly tech to call by and put the card in plus then set up the network configuration for both machines - you can learn from watching him/her. Or you can give it a go yourself - putting in the NIC is the easy bit :D

You can buy any brand of NIC - out of interest, here is a piccy of the card you have in the office machine already - see here (www.ascent.co.nz). You will also need to get a anti-static strap first it you decide to DIY.

This website here (resnet.plattsburgh.edu) has a pictorial guide of what the innards looks like (it is an older model PC so your innards will look a bit different). Ignore the reference to ISA slots in that site, you will be using a PCI card.
