195360 2003-11-28 09:55:00 Thanks for explaining pings, I always wondered how to test that, and as mine is 151 ms, is that good or bad? ?:| supergran (108)

195362 2003-11-28 19:07:00 Well, if I ping Paradise DNS server I get around 43/45 ms on ADSL. I would have thought that was quite good.

The other week things got slow for a little while, and on querying found out they were doing some upgrade work.

195364 2003-11-29 04:20:00 Found this post quite interesting because for a couple of months now I have noticed that my Jetstart connection (with Ihug) would crawl if I had one PC downloading and the other being used for general internet browsing. I only have the two PC's sharing the connection via a ADSL modem/router. When I initially got ADSL there didn't seem to be this slow down affect.

Just ran a wee test.
Pinged my ISP from one box and got a average time of 42 ms. Started a download on the second box and then re-pinged the ISP and this time got a average time 1505 ms, whilst the downloading box was enjoying a download speed of 17 KB/s. Whatever box is downloading, it seems to hog all the bandwidth leaving the other box with the scraps.

That is correct. The first one takes what it can get and anything left over is available for the other PC's. If you had a full speed connection you probably wouldn't notice this.

What is needed is way to throttle back speed to PC's. I know that this feature has been requested for the ADSL router I use so that speed can be evenly split over all the PCs or allocated to specific PCs.
