195476 2003-11-28 08:08:00 we got a lemon computer. it only came with 2usb ports, 1 hd space, 1 cd space and 128 mb of ram for xp. anyway we want to preserve the usb ports and want to get adsl. we got one of those crappy usf cases, so the pci would have to be half bloody hieght. is it possible to get a switch and plug the modem in via ethernet? the one thing they did right was put in intergrated 10/100 ethernet. 195478 2003-11-28 08:29:00 Why not get a Microsoft Keyboard... you know, the ones with USB ports on it??

Saves you the cost of a switch?

195479 2003-11-28 08:38:00 There are stacks of Ethernet Based ADSL modems available - theres no problem with that at all.

Have a look at Dick Smith Electronics (http://www.dse.co.nz)

Any ethernet based modem will connect directly to the Ethernet Port on the PC - no switch required.

195480 2003-11-28 08:38:00 Look here (Dick Smith Link) (www.dse.co.nz)

This will do what you want, you can connect to the modem via USB or Ethernet, and you have the space on the router to connect three other PCs if you want to network later on.

It's $179.00 now, I brought it on 'special' at $199.00 a month ago grrr.

195481 2003-11-28 08:40:00 You don't need a switch unless you want to share your internet connection. I presume you are talking about an ethernet dsl modem or a dual ethernet/USB one (will have an Rj45 port like the one on the computer not to be confused with the in Rj11 from your wall ph socket)? If it has ethernet, just plug it staight into your onboard lan/ethernet port . Try to avoid USB dsl as it uses more of your cpu cycles and from what I have heard is more prone to bugs than other forms of dsl connecton.
