| 195390 | 2003-11-28 04:22:00 | Agathokakological Agathokakological - composed of both good and evil With the LOTR World Premiere for The Return of the King imminent, perhaps it would be appropriate to recognise the extraordinarily complex character-traits Tolkien gave to Smeagol (Gollum) . From the original adventures of Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit," through to the climactic events on Mount Doom, Gollum provided continuity and an ever-present reminder of the Power of the Ring . He was without doubt the most agathokakological creature Tolkien could imagine . Cheers Billy 8-{) :| And as befits a computer-oriented Forum, there is a link between Gollum and computing . When Data General were developing their first 32 bit Eclipse mini-computer, the prototypes were named Coke and Gollum . And, true to its namesake, Gollum was the trickiest of the prototypes and posed the most mind-teasing problems during debugging . |
