195704 2003-11-29 03:55:00 As most of you who have seen my 50 other threads know, I am building my own computer. I originally wanted a radeon 9700pro for it, then a 9800pro, then I heard good things about the geforce fx5900!
What is best? Price is not too much of an issue, as long as it is sub $1000. I do want value for money however.
However, I want video out and in ports. That's basically it.
so, what to get? And can anyone recommend some high quality video card coolers?
thanks.

195705 2003-11-29 04:33:00 And also, what are some good 19" CRT monitors suitable for gaming that I can run at high resolutions with a good refresh rate?
One that I am looking at is the Viewsonic P90F which is good, but damn expensive.

195707 2003-11-29 04:53:00 personally I hate philips screens. The monitor I am looking at is flat, with a stripe grille, so no supporting wires visible. Also, it has rich colors which are perfect for photos, and since digital photography is a hobby of mine, I need accurate colors.
It's mainly the graphics card which needs debating, I am seriously looking at the geforce FX 5900 and a freezer to cool it :)

195708 2003-11-29 04:55:00 Also, one of my friends has an overclocked Geforce FX in his high end computer he dubbed "Neo," and he can run Counter Strike at over 100fps at the highest settings!!!!! Wilky (776)
195709 2003-11-29 04:58:00 The radeon line of cards easily outperform the nvidia line,Cost whys they are cheaper as well, and ive read many reports of people claiming the image quality is better....Although image quality in many cases is a personable decision and i personally have never used a machine running any of the current top of the line cards....

head over to madonion for 10 billion differing opinions of video cards...

Whoops,I mean Futuremark as they are now called.

195710 2003-11-29 05:00:00 A cold plate of baked beans could run couter strike at 100fps,Its not exactly a match for current hardware.

Get him to run 3dmark2001 and compare his score to the online database.

195713 2003-11-29 05:12:00 hehehe. Freezer.

Be aware that GeForce takes up an AGP, and a PCI slot, because it is humongous.

I read through all the benchmarks, and notes at tomshardware, and apparently Radeon 9800 has better image quality than Geforce when both are using those things, FSAA, and antialiasing or something.

Have a look here www6.tomshardware.com

I dunno how much this can be trusted, but it looks thorough.

I think Geforce is heaps better for linux, if you ever plan to use it.

Given the choice, I woudnt care. I would just be happy to have one of them. It would be quite a significant upgrade from my Geforce 2 mx, but then I would have to upgrade the rest of my computer, so the new $1000 graphics card wouldnt be out of place.
