195638 2003-11-29 00:26:00 Hi All,

I have just connected up with Jetstream fullspeed and when I check my usage meter my uploads are like 70MB for one day. Yes I use Kaaza but I am not sharing any of my files. Can anyone tell me what might be causing these upload amounts? Damsel in distress.

Thanks in advance

Fiona

195639 2003-11-29 01:00:00 If you just have it, give it a day or so to settle down. No idea why, but when i finally got into our usage meter (took a few days to get into Xtra's and then a few days after that to finally get into Telecoms), it said we clocked 54.56MB in the space of 1 second. Then the day after that we did 2MB.

Now it settled (I hope) and says we've done 10MB over 3 days which sounds a bit better

195640 2003-11-29 02:46:00 You have to remember that you are charged for ALL TRAFFIC to your IP address. This includes not only the data that is transmitted but also the header information that goes with it. It builds up quickly.

Also you are charged for people accessing your IP address even if you wont let them. A good example of this is probes of your IP address by hackers looking for open ports. While it lookes like nothing is happening data is going back and forward.

And heaven forbid if someone starts a DOS (denial of service) attack on your full speed IP address then you will find it adds up in seconds.

You also have to look for programs that are running on your PC that access the net without your permission. One of the keyboard programs reports home on a regular basis. That was covered a while back and I cant remember the thread. Do a search here for it.

on jetstream all national traffic should be unlimited.

195642 2003-11-29 08:04:00 Thanks all. Still really worried though, I have uninstalled Kaaza, i have run spybot and reg clean. Today all I have done on the net is browse a few pages and recieved about 6 emails. My usage today is 5MB download and 10MB upload. Looking at my connection now - is is showing my sending as twice the amount as my recieving. I am running Norton personal firewall and am totally dumb founded as to what the heck is going on. :-( stormnz (4921)
195643 2003-11-29 10:35:00 You could try using ZoneAlarm, Kerio or Outpost to see what is uploading data. The application will have to ask permission before it sends data out.

Or, you may like to look at a small program from sysinternals called TCP View. Here is the link:

www.sysinternals.com

This will tell you what is connected, what's transferring data, and what applications / ports are listening. You should be able to track down the culprit there.

As a final suggestion, some multimedia keyboards (HP from memory) "phoned home" when the user was online. You may like to look into this too.
