195566 2003-11-29 22:46:00 >Sy, as tweak'e says, once you have decided on the cpu,

not quite what i ment.

most newbies decide on the cpu first which is not the best way. really you need to decide on motherboard first, cpu second. in realility its decideing on the cpu and motherboard COMBO which is the key.

195567 2003-11-29 22:48:00 The first thing. Ask yourself ."Why do I want a new Computer?"
It seems obvious to me that most people are buying new (more powerful) computers just for the sake of having the most powerful machine in the street, or the classroom.
If you are not doing work that requires the extra power why buy it.
In my case I have an Athlon 3000+ with 1024 megs of ram. I have a DVD read/ write that has never been used, and probably never will. I have MS Office. I use Word and I use powerpoint as a picture album.
All the work I do could be done just as fast on a 486 DX 4 100 with Word 6.
If I had thought of this ten years ago I could have saved enough money to buy a new car.
If you still want a new computer get an Athlon powered one. It's cheaper than Intel. Quality wise, no difference.

i can't quite agree on that. CPU wise, yes they are about the same (tho intel temp cutout is better) however when it comes to motherboards quailty varies a great amount, hence the "decide on cpu/motherboard combo".

195569 2003-11-29 23:03:00 My reasons for buying a new PC is that, while I can cope on my current P3 700. Sometimes, it freezes when I multitask, thus, not enough Ram. Also, some of the hardware features are breaking, e.g the other day, I got a new PSU.... I can't shut the computer without hitting the button at the wall, it just won't do it by itself for some reason.

Many parts of this computer are breaking down, hard drive is running out (6.4GB) , etc. And therefore, I've decided that I only need to spend a tiny bit of money on top of the cost of upgrade, to get a complete new system.

Cheers, will look into motherboards....

195570 2003-11-30 01:21:00 Tweak'e, as price is a consideration for sy then the cpu does IMO have a bearing on his decision more than the board plus, good Intel cpu boards tend to be more expensive than good AMD ones. So although I generally agree with you in sy's case I think the cpu should have a larger weighting than you might otherwise give it.

I also think a P4 is unecessary for the tasks he wants to perform. As hinted to above, a Duron will probably suffice (on a good board, although it will waste the boards capabilities to a certain extent).

195571 2003-11-30 02:51:00 Let me make this easy - get an Athlon 2000 Mhz, 512MB ram and a GeForce4 440MX and you will be sweet. Craig (448)
195572 2003-11-30 03:26:00 At the end of the day, it'll really depend on how much you are willing to spend. Pentium4's are much better than AthlonXP's in high-end video/audio work, however as you have indicated that you won't be doing any of that stuff, it won't be a problem.

From my experience, AthlonXP's are much more reliable when it comes to multitasking than Celerons. From what I've seen, they tend to cope much better (I have an Athlon (thunderbird) 1.4ghz with 256mb of RAM, and I can simutaneously run Word/Excel, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Windows media player, and MSN Messenger, plus Norton Internet Security/Antivirus running in the background with no problems). On the other hand, a friend of mine has a Celeron (from memory about 1.8ghz), which does not perform as well.

The only drawback with AthlonXP's is that they tend to run at a hotter temperature than Pentium 4's (not sure about relative to Celerons though). A newish AthlonXP (probably 2500+ or higher) would last you for the several years at least, especially if you're only going to be doing word-processing/internet type stuff.

Go bargainhunting and see what you can find.

195573 2003-11-30 03:32:00 Cheers people, it looks as is Athlon XP 2000+/2400+ is the way to go for me....

If any of you have a CPU around this speed, could you please tell me, in your system:
1) How big of a hard drive? How much is used?
2) How much ram?
3) What type of motherboard if you know
4) How long it takes to startup andshutdown

Many thanks once again,

195574 2003-11-30 04:09:00 I have a 2100+ . 40gb HDD, ~70% full (win98+mandrake9 . 1+data) . Only 512mb ram currently .

Gigabyte ga7va KT400 motherboard . I didn't get an nforce2 because it wasn't worth it in my case ($$$ vs . performance), plus the kt400 has better linux support .

Boot time really depends on the OS, and what you load at startup . For me win98 is ~1min . Mandrake ~1:30 . WinXP will be faster .

BTW, the current "low end" athlons run cool and have lots of headroom for overclocking . I had mine at 2500+ without problems (or much extra heat) . I don't normally OC it though, just playing .

195575 2003-11-30 05:52:00 Cool, thanks,

Two of the systems I have run overclocked all the time . (Not this one though)

I was thinking of maybe a 2000+ OCed to 2400+ maybe . . .

Any one else? Thanks,
