195945 2003-11-30 23:54:00 hi folks,

was wondering if you could help, my sister has a compaq presario
5000, running ME. It has a two cd recovery sytem, and the second cd has developed a small scratch, which wont allow it to complete the recovery.

I have tried making a copy, but get the same results. it has accepted the first disc, and wont let me rerun the whole recovery either,

any ideas would be appreciated,

thanks,

Robby

195946 2003-12-01 00:00:00 try a windows only recovery, hopefully only the first disk will be required.

if that fails contact compaq and see if you can get a replacement or....

go buy a new copy of windows.

195947 2003-12-01 00:08:00 A few links for home remedies, from Google.

I have had success with toothpaste. Could try Brasso or car cutter polish. Use sparingly, only where the scratch is.

195948 2003-12-01 00:27:00 See if you can find someone else who has the same set of recovery disks, and see if you can borrow them. I don't know if this is legal though.. somebody (208)
195949 2003-12-01 01:34:00 Your local video hire shop may have a machine to remove scratches on cd's rmcb (164)
195950 2003-12-01 04:12:00 This franchise operation (www.discstation.co.nz) can help. Napier is in the middle of the page.

You may have to wait a few days if it is not done on site but they do a good job at reasonable cost.

195952 2003-12-01 10:16:00 I know someone who used brasso on a very badly scratched CD ( lots of scratches) Took a few days of on and off work but recovered everything on the CD. I would try this as a last resort. You can't make a stuff disk any worse. Berryb (654)
195953 2003-12-02 01:22:00 Brasso or other polishes are only an option for the slightest of scratches, but even then it is a risky operation. Try to polish out anything deeper and you are likely to introduce surface-uniformity errors that can reflect the laser beam away from the optics. This can cause focus hunting and a "cannot read disk" result.

Polishing involves cutting back the entire data area of the disk, leaving a perfectly flat and unblemished surface. It costs just a few dollars so it is not worth wasting time and effort or risking further damage by trying to do it yourself.
